There is little doubt the Kentucky basketball at Auburn game today is the headliner across the NCAA basketball landscape when the two best teams in the Southeastern Conference stage a war of title implications.

“Stage” may be the keyword. While this is a basketball game the loud, raucous roof-shattering decibel-breaking atmosphere may rival more of a heavy metal rock concert.

While early in SEC play this game may well decide who will win the SEC regular-season title. The SEC scheduling Gods gave No. 2 ranked Auburn (17-1, 6-0) the easiest of easy schedules, and No. 12 Kentucky (15-3, 5-1) is really the only key game for them to make their mark.

Kentucky still has a gauntlet of brutal waters to navigate through, but more chances to make a statement and bolster their resume before Selection Sunday.

While Kentucky wants a win without a doubt they can afford to drop this one and still continue to have ample games to make a splash, including next week’s game at Kansas.

Auburn more than anything is more in need of a win and coach Bruce Pearl would love nothing better than to hang an L on John Calipari.

Auburn fans have been camping out for this game in the rain similar to what Big Blue Nation does just to get Big Blue Madness tickets.

Kentucky has not looked very good on the road this season losing to Notre Dame and LSU. At Texas A&M on Wednesday they escaped with a win, and while they needed to gut that one out and show chemistry, that kind of performance will get them run out of Auburn.

Auburn is looking to run its winning streak to 15 games.

Let’s not forget the game features the two best freshmen in the league in Kentucky’s TyTy Washington and the Tigers’ Jabari Smith, who was co-freshman of the week last week. Washington has one four straight honors and five this season.

Kentucky vs Auburn Prediction Today

The home team in this series has won 8 of the last 10 matchups. Auburn also beat UK 77-71 win the 2019 Midwest Regional Final, but the Wildcats lead the overall series 96-22.

Jabari Smith, who averages 15.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game is big in the post at 6-foot-10 220 pounds but is a great outside shooter.

Eastern Kentucky transfer Wendell Green runs the point (13.1 points, 5.6 assists). Standing 7-foot-1 and 245 pounds, Walker Kessler (10.3 points, 7.4 boards) will go toe-to-toe with Oscar Tshiebwe and he rejects 4.3 shots a game which is second in the nation.

This game could come down to free throws in the end. Auburn commits 18.4 fouls a game while Kentucky only commits 13.6 a game which results in teams getting to the line a mere 13.1 times a game which ranks 26 best in the NCAA.

There is no doubt Kentucky can win this game but which Big Blue road team shows up today will be the deciding factor along with Kentucky staying out of foul trouble. Should they do so look for this to be a thriller to the end? Let’s hope so.

Until they prove me wrong and I hope Kentucky does I am a little skeptical about today.

My prediction is  Auburn 78, Kentucky 72
