The three biggest takeaways from Saturday’s win over GT
By Luke Bennett
There was a lot to digest from Saturday’s 67-53 victory over Georgia Tech, but here are the three biggest stories, and some may surprise you.
Kentucky’s win over Georgia Tech wasn’t the most convincing win in the Calipari era, however, it was pretty darn revealing. The 14-point victory highlighted key issues that the Wildcats must address if they want to push far into March.
There were a plethora of things to analyze from the game.
You could start with the fact that Tyrese Maxey shot 0% from the field on 0-9 shooting. Ouch. But, he was able to singlehandedly stifle Michael Devoe, Georgia Tech’s biggest threat who averages a cool 21.4 points per game, as well as the nation’s sixth-best three-point shooting percentage (.586), to the tune of 5-points, 2-11 from the field, and four turnovers.
Or you could point to Kentucky’s improved defense, holding the Yellow Jackets to 53 points and a 23-point second half. As well as forcing eight steals on seventeen total turnovers.
Maybe, you’re even thinking, “EJ and Kahlil have been super quiet.” Again, you would be right. EJ, the sophomore big man finding his way into an enlarged role in the 2019-2020 season, went 0-4 from the field coming off of two career-high performances. And despite fielding a couple big rebounds, Kahlil Whitney only played seven minutes as he also struggles to find valuable playing time, let alone room to morph into a role.
These are all valid observations from Saturday’s game, but somehow, they are not quite worthy of the three biggest takeaways.
Let’s begin.
