Rundown: Keldon Johnson Career High and Willie to the Warriors
By Alex Weber
Keldon Johnson had a spectacular game in the NBA Summer League, Willie Cauley-Stein is off to Golden State, and updating Jared Lorenzen’s situation
Tuesday was once again a busy night for former and current Kentucky basketball players. NBA summer league action wore on as Keldon Johnson headlined another crop of impressive performances from former cats, meanwhile, Willie Cauley-Stein was involved in off-the-court action, signing a one-year deal with the Golden State Warriors. The summer can be a bit of a drag when it comes to college athletics but our beloved former Wildcats are keeping us plenty occupied. In addition to the buzz the Cats in the NBA are generating, dear former Wildcat Jared Lorenzen need our support.
Let’s not work harder than we should and get started on that rundown:
Jared Lorenzen is in the Hospital
Beloved former Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen, a man worthy of a thousand nicknames and a dear friend of the Kentucky football program, was admitted to the ICU a few days ago and is “fighting with everything he has” according to Matt Jones:
That was a couple of days ago. Since then, no significant updates have been given although Jones did share another message from Jared’s family on Tuesday:
With fragile medical situations like these, false details and rumors tend to spread. The most articulate description we have of Jared’s situation is the two messages sent directly from his family. It’s a tenuous time for the Lorenzen family and I would urge everyone to keep Jared in your thoughts and prayers. If you feel so inclined, perhaps even reach out with a note of hopeful care or positivity. Otherwise, we can only sit back and hope everything turns out ok for Jared and his family.
Keldon Johnson Scores 29 in Summer League Play
Have a day, Mr. Keldon Johnson. One day after his debut in a San Antonio Spurs jersey, Keldon came out on fire Tuesday evening in Salt Lake City. The rookie wing scored 29 points on 10/17 shooting from the field and even converted a buzzer-beating heave from behind the mid-court line.
Keldon looked aggressive and was an attacking force on both ends of the court, shooting jumpers, driving the lane, and swallowing rebounds. After coming into last season billed as a potential top-10 pick and then sliding all the way down to 29th in the draft, Keldon has a chip on his bulked-up shoulders and is already showing why passing on him was a mistake. Check out his highlights below:
Willie Cauley-Stein Joins Golden State
Our former blonde-haired, shot-swatting All-American anchor for the 38-1 club is on the move after 4 seasons in Sacramento. According to reports from Warriors’ correspondent Marcus Thompson, Cauley-Stein is on his way a few miles south to join Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and what’s left of the Warriors’ dynasty. Aside from the minimal salary, the fit is a perfect one for Willie and for Golden State, who is in desperate need of an extra frontcourt body. Kentucky Basketball Announces Jersey Numbers for 2020
There you go, your 2020 Kentucky Basketball roster and jersey numbers. I’ll relay them below in case the graphic the UK twitter account used gets messed up or something:
(0) Ashton Hagans
(1) Nate Sestina
(2) Kahlil Whitney
(3) Tyrese Maxey
(4) Nick Richards
(5) Immanuel Quickley
(10) Johnny Juzang
(11) Dontaie Allen
(14) Brennan Canada
(21) Zan Payne
(23) EJ Montgomery
Not much analysis from me, but I’ll probably create fun little references for each player based on their number in a post later today, so stay tuned for that. Otherwise, the only real take I have is that our roster is populated with simpletons. Every single digit number is taken. It’s okay guys, the numbers don’t matter, performance on the court does.
That does it for today. A short little rundown of Tuesday’s biggest bits of news. Remember to keep checking in on WBN as you go about your day!
