2. John Wall (2009-10)

John Wall is thought of in most circles as the best point guard Kentucky’s had during Coach Cal’s tenure. While that’s a debatable perspective, he comes in at No.2 on this list. Wall and the recruiting class of 2009 set the tone for what Calipari hoped to build in Lexington.

John Wall was lightning quick with the basketball in his hands. He was the No.1 recruit coming out of high school, and he chose to play at Kentucky. After several years of disappointment on the recruiting trail, BBN was excited to see an elite-level talent pick Kentucky as his destination for college basketball.

Wall wasted little time ingratiating himself with the Kentucky basketball fans. Calipari’s style of play, matched by Wall’s ability were a lethal combination. Add in DeMarcus Cousins, and the 2009-10 Kentucky basketball team was a force to be reckoned with.

The Cats went 35-3 that season, losing only to South Carolina and Tennessee in conference-play. Wall led the way for the team with 16.6 points and 6.5 assists per game. Unfortunately, one of the most talented teams in college basketball that season played their worst game at the worst time and failed to advance to the Final Four.

Calipari’s first team will always hold a special place for most Kentucky basketball fans, and those fans will always remember John Wall.
