If he returns, and it’s likely he will, PJ Washington will be the emotional leader of Kentucky’s team next season. Washington was benched midway through conference-play last season, and he got the message.

PJ was benched in favor of Wenyen Gabriel against Auburn. The Wildcats lost the game, but through no fault of Washington who scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. PJ eventually regained a spot in the starting lineup, but that was only due to Jarred Vanderbilt’s injury.

After the benching, over the last 12 games of the season, Washington scored double figures in 11 games and averaged 12.8 points per game. If Cal was trying to send a message, I think it’s safe to say the message was received.

Washington needs to work on his outside jumper over the summer, and if he is able to knock down even just 32% from downtown, he will be in line for SEC Player of the Year next season. If he plays up to his potential. he will be the best player on the Kentucky basketball team next season.
