Devin Booker drained his second game winner of the season Friday night, but his post-game comments are even better.
Playing in the NBA starts with confidence. If you lack it, you will have a tough time hanging with guys that think they are better than LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, etc. Guys like Devin Booker, probably.
Wesley Matthews is good defender, but can he hold down Devin Booker at the end of a game? He seems to think so.
He was wrong. Matthews, in fact, got burned.
This play is great for explaining NBA defense. The argument against the league is usually “those guys don’t play defense. Kids play with passion in college!” Matthews played great defense on that play. The difference is that in the NBA, guys like Booker make ridiculous shots despite great defense. Booker is a bright young player, and he still manages to be irrationally confident. That’s what it’s all about in this league.
But if you want to feel good about Kentucky, don’t worry. Booker feels good about Kentucky too.
Skal has no patience for Mason Plumlee
If you have followed “He Did What?!” lately, you know that Skal Labissiere has been on a great run since DeMarcus Cousins was traded to New Orleans. This week, he kept showing Kentucky fans how he really can play.
The Kings have now won seven of their last 10 games, while the Pelicans have only won four games since they traded for Cousins. Starting to think Sacramento is experiencing addition by subtraction? Hit the brakes.
The Pelicans should lose as many games as possible. New Orleans included their first round pick in this year’s draft in the trade for Cousins, but if they end up with a top three pick, the Pelicans would keep the pick for this year. So, point blank, New Orleans traded for Cousins and can still have a chance to get Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, or another top tier talent. Sacramento gonna Sacramento.
In honor of March Madness…
I present to you the maddest March of all.
The 2013-2014 run will always hold a special place in my blue heart. In my freshman year of college, Kentucky missed the tournament, and was not expected to do much the following year. But things gelled, tweaks were made, and James Young dunks were hammered.
Next: Kentucky's Final Four Formula
Of course, Kentucky ultimately lost to UConn. But if you close your eyes, take a deep breath, and hold back the tears, then you can picture Young charging to the rim and pretend Kentucky hoisted up the trophy as an 8 seed. I’m not crying.
Let’s hope Kentucky adds a few more plays like this over the next couple weeks.
