The Kentucky basketball program is trusting Wenyen Gabriel to become one of the best defensive players in the country. There are a number of dynamic playmakers along the perimeter, as well as a star-caliber freshman working the interior.
In order for Kentucky to maximize its potential, however, it’ll need Gabriel to fill his 3-and-D role to perfection.
Gabriel is a 6’9″ and 210-pound hybrid forward with a 36.5″ max vertical leap and a wingspan that’s been measured at both 6’11” and 7’1″. Regardless of which measurement is accurate, it’s clear that Gabriel has the size, length, and athleticism to play both forward spots.
Gabriel also plays with what seems like limitless energy on both ends of the floor—an invaluable quality that’s more of a skill than it’s given credit for.
True as that all may be, Gabriel’s impact on the Wildcats will not be complete if the D isn’t complemented by the 3. Isaiah Briscoe is a poor shooter, De’Aaron Fox has an erratic release, and Malik Monk hasn’t yet proven himself on the collegiate level.
If Gabriel can space the floor and defend multiple positions—and he’s certainly capable—he can help Kentucky win. If he struggles, Kentucky will pay the price.
