In most other seasons, De’Aaron Fox would be regarded as the No. 1 point guard prospect in the country. In 2016-17, he has unfathomably deep competition both amongst his Kentucky Wildcats teammates and the floor generals across the country.

Fox has a chance to be a Top 5 NBA Draft pick, but he’ll need to establish himself and help Kentucky win this coming season.

An explosive athlete with elite playmaking potential, Fox is the perfect point guard for John Calipari. His game blends many of the traits that make former Kentucky standouts and current NBA stars Eric Bledsoe and John Wall so special.

Fox has blazing end-to-end speed, paralyzing quickness, tremendous court vision, and scoring instincts that are reminiscent of Kyrie Irving’s when he was coming out of high school.

The harsh reality is that Fox will not be guaranteed the starting point guard role for the full season. Expectations are high, both Isaiah Briscoe and Malik Monk are lurking, and Kentucky can’t afford to have mid-season lineup changes that could create locker room tension.

Briscoe and Monk will likely end up at the 2, but the point remains: both in and outside of Kentucky, Fox has competition.
