26. Dirk Minniefield
Out of Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky, he only had to go down the road for his collegiate career. Minniefield was the 1979 Mr. Kentucky Basketball, and was recruited by his home city team. Not many players can say that. Along with that he was a McDonalds All-American, too.
Minniefield is a member of the 1000 point club for the Kentucky Wildcats, a feat that not many Wildcats reach. Minniefield also wracked up quite the amount of assists during his time in Lexington. He ended his career with 646 total assists, not too shabby for the guy.
Minniefield was drafted in the second round of the 1983 NBA Draft to the Dallas Mavericks. However, this is how his professional career played out:
- 1983–1985 Louisville Catbirds (CBA)
- 1985–1986 Cleveland Cavaliers
- 1986–1987 Houston Rockets
- 1987 Staten Island Stallions (USBL)
- 1987 Golden State Warriors
- 1987–1988 Boston Celtics
- 1992–1993 Rochester Renegade (CBA)
Minniefield’s career was cut short after issues with drug abuse, something he struggled with for many, many years. Minniefield did seek treatment and then became an NBA Drug Abuse Counselor himself.
