It’s weird to put Rick Pitino on the cover of this slide, but he surely was a fantastic coach for the University of Kentucky.
The 1996 Kentucky Wildcats are the #1 team in Kentucky Basketball history and it wasn’t an easy decision. They finished the season with a 34-2 record and defeated Syracuse University 76-67 to win their sixth National Championship game. They 27 straight games, scored 86 points in the first half against LSU in Baton Rouge and this was the season they took over the lead of the all time wins. Most, if not all players on this list are still vital in Kentucky Athletics. This season was before one-and-done and during a time when many programs were on the rise, but this was by far one of the most put together teams in the history of basketball.
Players included:
- Tony Delk-SEC Network host, retired jersey in rafters
- Antoine Walker
- Walter McCarty
- Derek Anderson
- Ron Mercer
- Mark Pope-Coach at Utah Valley University
- Anthony Epps-Daughter Makayla players for the University of Kentucky Women’s team.
- Wayne Turner- Current University of Louisville Assistant
- Jeff Sheppard
- Nazr Mohammed-Played in the NBA until this season.
- Cameron Mills
Among many others. These are common household names for the Big Blue Nation. For a prestigious program, it was hard to determine which team went where in the top 10, but I feel I did it justice.
