Kentucky Wildcats Basketball: The History of the “Y”
Our former writer Darren, now takes you on a journey through the history of the “Y” in Kentucky Wildcats basketball.
The “Y”. A tradition at Kentucky where former players, stars, and special people grace the crowd at Rupp Arena and join the cheerleaders to help spell out KENTUCKY. Placing their hands over their heads, they become the sole Y needed to finish the cheer.
I don’t know how long it has been going on, but its at least the last 10 or so years from what I can tell.
People from Randall Cobb, Ashley Judd, Josh Hutchinson and Anthony Davis have made their way to the University of Kentucky to be the Y. This is a small list among the amount of people who have. Most former basketball players, former football players and anyone in the public eye, Kentucky fan wise, have likely made their way to center court to be the famous Y.
Kentucky fans all around look forward to seeing who the Y is going to be, it doesn’t happen every game, but fans absolutely love when it does.
