An early game by game look at the Kentucky Wildcats football season

Year number two of the Derek Mason era is here and the Commodores should be an improved team. They return 17 starters from last year and Derek Mason will also be the defensive coordinator. It is a bit unusual for a head coach in the SEC to assume dual duties like this, but if you look at Mason’s defenses at Stanford, he may be the best man for the job. The Commodores return nine starters on defense and with one of the nation’s top defensive playcallers in charge, the defense will be Vandy’s strength.

Last year, the offense was a mess as the Commodores averages just 12.8 points a game in the SEC. Look for a ground oriented attack from new coordinator Andy Ludwig, similar to what Wisconsin ran. The QB position is totally a toss-up as four players started games last year. Patton Robinette should have the upper hand, but throwing deep is a problem with him. The WR corps desperately need someone to step up as well. Look for Ralph Webb to get the bulk of the carries and build on his impressive freshman campaign.

This is one of the games where Kentucky is better at virtually every position but they still have to overcome their tendency to lay an egg on the road. This game should give them momentum to close out the season strong.
