Early Signing Period on Its Way in Football?

Unlike college basketball, college football has no early signing period. Some might argue this, along with ESPN and other media outlets, is what has made National Signing Day the spectacle is has become. But there is talk an early signing period might be on its way; the SEC, however, opposes such a move. On Wednesday, the conference came out with a “contingency” plan if an early signing period comes into existence. Jeremy Fowler writes:

"“The league would favor a signing date the Monday after Thanksgiving if the Collegiate Commissioners Association decide to support an early signing period — which commissioner Mike Slive hopes doesn’t happen.Under that plan, only players who haven’t taken an official visit could sign on that date, while the remaining recruits would sign on the first Wednesday of February as normal.”"

The college basketball season is still 6 months away but that isn’t stopping anyone from making predictions for next season, especially when it comes to Kentucky. R.P Franklin writes:

"“With a year that is sure to be one of the most memorable in Kentucky Wildcats history, here are five bold predictions for the upcoming season.…Kentucky Will Continue to Own Louisville: Kentucky will be better than Louisville at every position, and because of that, expect the Wildcats to come away with a victory. With the loss of senior leaders Russ Smith and Luke Hancock, it’s hard to see where the passion or scoring will come from with Louisville, especially against the Wildcats.”"

Billy Donovan was once the head coach of the Orlando Magic. But his tenure seemed to last as long as Rick Pitino. But he’s causing quite a stir with recent comments indicating he can’t guarantee he’ll be coaching Florida next season. Eamonn Brennan writes:

"“Donovan, at the end of the day, just really doesn’t want to be called a liar. And can you blame him?You could understand if Florida fans were slightly frustrated by this, because everyone loves to hear their coach say the rah-rah thing instead of the realistic one. But Donovan is being realistic and honest, as he’s almost always been, about the NBA.”"

UofL fans dubbed 2013 the “Year of the Cardinal” after winning the Sugar Bowl, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, making the NCAA Women’s Basketball Final, and advancing to the College World Series in baseball. And yes, that is impressive. However, for Kentucky fans it just made Cardinal fans that more insufferable. Imagine, then, how insufferable they would be if UofL had done what Wisconsin-Whitewater pulled off this year. Dan Treadway writes:

"“On Tuesday, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated Emory College to win the Division III baseball championship. On the surface this is a tremendous accomplishment, given the hundreds of schools that participate in Division III athletics, but it means much more when ones considers that with this victory, the Warhawks became the first NCAA institution ever to win the national championship in all three major men’s sports (baseball, football and basketball).”"

On Tuesday night, the US Men’s National Team defeated Azerbaijan 2-0 in a pre-World Cup friendly in San Francisco. It wasn’t the prettiest of matches and it’s not clear how much Jürgen Klinsmann and his staff can take away from the USMNT’s victory. Grant Wahl writes:

"“To be frank, though, it’s hard to learn much of anything from this game that will be useful for the World Cup. None of the U.S.’s group foes (Ghana, Portugal and Germany) will play in a defensive shell like Azerbaijan did, so hopefully we’ll pick up more about this U.S. team in upcoming friendlies against Turkey and Nigeria.”"
