The only thing that can trump a rap sheet, a stuffed stat sheet. Charlie strong Dyer straits

Sited for doing 96 mph in a 70 mph zone, new Louisville Cardinal RB Michael Dyer drove away from his Arkansas traffic stop with a mere $175 fine, points on his license, and 5 days of community service, besides going fast was his specialty, on and off the field.

While Dyer drove away with a mere slap on the wrist, the officer that pulled Dyer over left with the carbon copy of the traffic ticket and a reason to be terminated from his job. The reason, an unconventional stop that did not conform to the law.

That officer, Trooper Royce Denney, seemingly knew Dyer was a football player after pulling him over. While he turned the camera in his patrol car off during the stop, some video was still recorded and that video made a great haunt four months later after a Freedom of Information Act request was filed, the tape was turned over to the media.

In that tape, one can hear Denney state, “Carrying a pistol around? Uncool. You’ve got a career ahead of you but you’re being a total dumbass right now.” Denney then told Dyer that he could report him to his head coach, but didn’t want him to have to deal with “the NCAA crap.”

During the encounter, Dyer tells Denney, “I’m done with this. This is my second chance over here,” before pleading with Denney to take the gun in which the officer obliged.

This run in occurred after Dyer’s time at Auburn where he was suspended after testifying during a trial that a gun used in an armed robbery was his and he routinely used marijuana and synthetic marijuana.

So it was surprising when it was announced that Dyer would be attending Louisville. The same Louisville that is coached by  Charlie Strong who a mere 3 years ago implemented his rules of football that include “No Drugs” and “No Guns”.

Charlie Strong stated today that Dyer was joining the Cardinals to offer him a second chance. What that tell everyone watching is that Strong is likely not a numbers guy, as this is at least his third… if not fourth or higher.

Strong’s choice in accepting Dyer seems desperate. Out of sorts for a program on the heels of their greatest season in program history.

So perhaps it has something to do with the little bit of Auburn history Dyer showed:

  • As a true freshman in 2010 Dyer rushed for 1,093 yards on 182 carries and five touchdowns. A feat that broke Bo Jackson’s Auburn record for most rushing yards by a freshman.
  • Dyer rushed for 143 yards on 22 carries and was named the Offensive Player of the Game during the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.
  • Dyer rushed for 1,242 yards on 242 attempts as a sophomore, was named to the All-SEC first team by the AP and the Coaches’ Poll and with only two years at Auburn, ranks 10th in all-time rushing with 2,335 yards.

Seems like the only thing that can trump a rap sheet is a stat sheet like that.
