Former University of Kentucky QB Morgan Newton was released today by the New York Giants in order to make room for new Giant acquisitions Kyle Bosworth and Chase Clement. Newton, who signed last Thursday as a TE, was accompanied on the release by DB John Stevenson and TE Michael Palmer.

After going undrafted and not signing a free agent deal, the 240 lb, 6’4 Newton had impressed during rookie try outs.

After starting his career at Kentucky as a QB, during his senior season he transitioned into a TE. In his career, he completed 50.3% of his passes (193 of 384) for 1,837 yards, 15 TD, and 13 INTs. Despite not catching a pass during his collegiate career, he did rush for 515 yards and 3 TD on 169 carries.

Newton was the 3rd QB to sign with the Giants after Jared Lorenzen (2004) and Andre Woodsen (2008) and was the fifth member of the 2012 class to sign with an NFL team (Larry Warford (Detroit), Martavius Neloms (Detroit), Matt Smith (Atlanta) and Collins Ukwu (Minnesota)).
