There were quite a few Kentucky Baseball players amongst those that earned All-SEC honors today when results of the coaches voting were annnounced.

Kentucky sophomore A.J. Reed was named to the All-SEC first team as a Designated Hitter/Ultilityman. He is the first Kentucky player since 2011 to make the squad and the first UK player to earn first-team honors as a DH since Brad Hindersman in 1993.

Kentucky sophomore Austin Cousino was named as one of three outfielders on the All-SEC Defensive Team. This was the second consecutive season that he was named to the team. Last year, he picked up accolades as the SEC Freshman of the Year and All-SEC second team.

Kentucky freshmen Kyle Barrett (catcher) and Greg Fettes (outfielder) were named to the All-SEC freshmen team. They join Reed (2012), Cousino (2012), Ryan Wilkes (2005) and Antone DeJesus (2005) as UK players that have earned conference All-Freshman honors. In being honored, Fettes became the first catcher in program history to make the freshmen team.

Amongst freshmen in the SEC, Barrett’s .349 batting average ranked second. Overall, he ranked 10th in batting average for the entire conference.

Next weekend will be the Major League Baseball Draft. We will have a good idea soon of which players will be returning or going pro. There’s also the matter of the incoming freshmen class–some may be drafted and go to Kentucky or will opt to turn professional.
