I realize that everyone is looking forward to the Kentucky football class of 2013, but there is still some talent on the existing squad. New UK running back coach Chad Scott talked to Larry Vaught recently about the returning talent:

"Question: Have you had a chance to evaluate the returning running backs yet? Scott: “I have. Last year the two guys they used for the most part were Raymond Sanders and Jonathan George. Those guys played really well. Even though it is a spread offense, the run game is downhill. Sanders has the ability where we can use him as a running back and slot receiver and find ways to get him the ball in space. George, we will play more with him in the pistol because he is more of a downhill runner and will be very effective in short yardage and goal-line situations. So those two kids coming back with experience they have in the SEC is huge for us.” Question: What about Josh Clemons, who redshirted last year because of his knee, and Dyshawn Mobley, who played sparingly as a true freshman? Scott: “Mobley not play as much, so it is kind of hard to give him a fair assessment. We have to wait and see in spring ball and see how he does. With (Justin) Taylor being redshirted, we will have to wait and see what he does. Clemons, his freshman year he showed a lot of promise and what he can do. We are confident he has that ability. It’s just whether or not his injury lets him come back and do it again.”"

The Kentucky baseball season got underway this weekend and the #8 Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start. Junior second baseman J.T. Riddle set a UK record going 6-6 at the plate yesterday and Jerad Grundy had 9 K’s in six innings as UK rolled to a 20-3 win over Niagra. You can expect that after a game like this, the UK head coach Gary Henderson had lots of praise to go around:

"“J.T. is just a better player,” UK head coach Gary Henderson said. “He is more composed, he has always had good composure but it is even better. He is strong. His skill level is improved. He is more disciplined at the plate. Obviously he has better bat speed and the strength issue is really obvious. He is a really, really good player and he has gotten off to a good start.” Grundy (1-0) worked six innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs, walking one and striking out a career-high tying nine. Sophomore Jeff Boehm took over to start the seventh, working one inning with one run surrendered. Freshman righty Tyler Cox tossing a shutout eighth inning and freshman Zach Strecker made his debut with a shutout ninth inning. “Jerad had a nice night for us,” Henderson said. “Some things that were very noticeable were that in the fourth inning he started to find his secondary stuff and in the fifth inning his velocity stepped up. (He was) much better in the fourth and fifth. He had to throw a few extra pitches in the sixth because we kicked it around a little bit, but a really good outing for Jerad to get the season going.” The Wildcats collected 20 runs on 17 hits, nine walks and three hit batters, also swiping three bases. It was UK’s first 20-run output since a beating of Illinois-Chicago in 2012."
