Karl Towns Jr expected to commit to Kentucky Wildcats today
By Paul Jordan
As Jason told us last night, it appears that FSU DE Coach D.J. Eliot will be the defensive coordinator at Kentucky. While multiple sources are reporting it, it can not be officially announced for a few days. Stoops had his first radio show last night and he talked about what he was looking for in a DC and the Orlando Sentinel filled in with some details on Eliot:
"During his first hour-long radio show as head coach Monday night, Stoops told Kentucky fans that he already knew who he was going to hire and how much he would allow that assistant to call plays. According to Jen Smith of the Lexington Herald-Leader, Stoops told listeners, “The person I’m going to hire, I have great trust in and we’re very familiar with each other.” As he discussed play-calling, Stoops said the following: “I will oversee it during the week and be involved in the game plan and watch each and every practice and every play with the adjustments and things that are going on and then I will step back and let him do his job.” Eliot, who had been part of Stoops’ staff at FSU since 2010, played a key role in turning FSU’s defense from being one of the worst units in the country to one of the best. The year before Stoops and Eliot arrived — Stoops also arrived in 2010 — the Seminoles were among the 20 worst teams in college football defensively. They enter next month’s Orange Bowl with the nation’s No. 2 ranked total defense. A large share of the credit for the improved play goes to FSU’s defensive ends. Potential first- or second-round NFL Draft picks Brandon Jenkins, Bjoern Werner and Cornellius “Tank” Carradine were either brought to FSU by or molded while at FSU by Eliot."
November 24, 2012; Louisville, KY USA; Louisville Cardinals head coach Charlie Strong reacts during the second half of play against the Connecticut Huskies at Papa John
While Mark Stoops fired off the first jabs at Louisville on Sunday, there is a big question as to whether Charlie Strong will even be around to coach the Cardinals next year. Strong held a press conference in which he was evasive about his plans for next year and then created a full fledged Cardinal County meltdown when saying UL fans should be as passionate as Kentucky fans:
"“You want the passion from the fans,” Strong said. “You want the support. When we came here for senior day and when we got off the bus – and I don’t care what time Card March is – no one came out. We had a few fans out there, we had the real fans out there, but you’d like to see more fans come out.” It’s an understandable statement. Louisville’s showing of support for the Connecticut game was not in line with that of a fan base whose team was 9-1 and ranked in the nation’s top 20. If Cardinal fans want to be upset about a coach at least considering a position elsewhere, then at least some of that outrage has to be directed inward. Strong then followed that statement up by making perhaps the biggest faux pas any Cardinal coach can make: saying Louisville fans need to be more like Kentucky fans. “Not to throw any salt in an open wound,” Strong prefaced. “Kentucky can travel with the Big Blue Nation and go take over. We should have that same passion here and go take over.”"
As expected, a full fledge meltdown occurred among the Card fans. If you have some time waiting for the Karl Towns announcement, go read the comments on that Card Chronicle story.
Comedy. Just pure comedy. I love the comments that Strong is “attempting to fire the fanbase up”. Sorry … if you are 10-2 and in a BCS Bowl and your coach has to praise the rivals to get support to travel to a BCS Bowl ….. yes, you are a sad fanbase.
