Anthony Davis is the SEC Freshman of the Week and the AP Poll Shake Up
The man-child that is Anthony Davis was named SEC Freshman of the week. At Auburn, Davis had 14 points, 4 blocks and 6 rebounds. At Tennessee, he had 18 points 4 blocks and 8 rebounds. He, along with Michael Kidd-Glichrist, has been the most consistent player that the Wildcats have had all season long. He is a match up nightmare for any team to plan against and he is a game changer on defense.
Also, in his past two games he is shooting 86% from the free throw line, a stat that has improved trememdously. He is shooting 83% from the charity stripe in the last five games, starting from when he went 12-13 against Louisville. Opposing teams will attempt “Hack-a-Davis” at their own peril.
Headlines:
– As expected, the Kentucky Wildcats held firm at #2 in the AP Top 25 Poll. They are 17-1 while Syracuse (#1), Baylor (#3), and Murray State (#10!) remain the only unbeaten teams left on college basketball. Baylor plays at #7 Kansas tonight, so I am giving them a loss there, and Syracuse will lose eventually, it’s just a matter of time. Murray State looks to be the only team that may end the regular season undefeated.
North Carolina dropped from #3 to #8 after the 33 point loss to Florida State; Indiana dropped to only #13 this week after losing twice, once at home to an unranked Minnesota team and after getting blown out at #6 Ohio State. IU can look forward to falling further as the season progresses and the losses continue to pile up.
Louisville fell out of the top 25 from #15 to #21 after losing 4 out of 5 games, one of those being a 31 point beat down at Providence on Tuesday night and another one of those losses being to an unranked Notre Dame team at home. Louisville is playing #22 Marquette on the road as you are reading this and then will play at Pitt on Saturday. Expect them to be out of the Top 25 when they release the polls next Monday as I suspect they will drop one of those two games, maybe both.

– Cody Quinn, a three star defensive back from Ohio, gave his verbal to Kentucky earlier today. This is a huge pick up for the Cats as Quinn received offers from Illinois, Wisconsin, Purdue, West Virginia, and Cincinnati. I am sure our football editior Kyle is jumping for joy at the moment. Ask him what he thought or UK’s defensive back play this season and he will give you an hour long speech about how awful they were. And he would be correct in everything he said.
– Derek Willis will announce his college choice on Friday and the Wildcat Blue Nation will be here to drop the breaking news for you. All signs are pointing to him becoming the first 2013 Wildcat commit. Experts think that the Cats are his top choice, followed by Purdue and Louisville. Both John Calipari and Rick Pitino watched Willis in person when he played at Butler high school in Louisville, Kentucky. If Willis indeed becomes a Wildcat instead of a Cardinal, this will again show the basketball world which coach RUNS the state of Kentucky. But Pitino did pull Elisha Justice (snicker).
– Kentucky will welcome a tough 13-4 (2-1 SEC) Arkansas Razorback team tomorrow night in Rupp Arena. The Razoerbacks play a face paced up and down game that may suit Kentucky, but John Calipari is wary. he says they play “frentic” basketball and their style is comparable to the 40 Minutes of Hell they used to play under Nolan Richardson. Check out our site later as Paul Jordan will have everything you need to know in the Arkansas Know Your Enemy post.
– And finally, I want to wish everyone a happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. John Calipair took part in a symposium last year dedicated to the memory of Dr. King. He has also been tweeting about the meaning behind the Holiday since yesterday. Cal understands the importance of today’s meaning.
In honor of the Holiday, here is Dr. King’s immortal speech given on the steps of the National Mall in Washington D.C. on August 28th, 1963. I think he would be pleased with the changes our country has made since then, but we still have a long way to go as a country and as individuals.
Peace to All.
