2011 All-State team

The end of the year has come and gone and everyone either has already put out or is preparing to put out their All-State teams. I’ve compiled my Kentucky All-State team, but I’ve done mine a little differently than some of the others you’ll find. I used a combination of the following:

1. Team success
– Players from successful teams faired better. Football is a team sport and while there are always going to be talented players on subpar teams, the best make their teammates better, leading to wins.
2. Individual statistics
– For positions that generate statistics, raw statistics played a big factor. Players that racked up numbers fared better than players that weren’t utilized as much. Double teams and opposing teams focusing a game plan on stopping a player were considered.
3. Physical ability
– Bigger, faster, stronger players got a bump. While this usually helps someone spill over into the college interest and individual statistics categories, it’s not always the case. Linemen in particular are harder to judge.
4. Competition
– Players who played against top level competition got a bump. Players from small schools are obviously still included, but evaluating someone that competing against the best competition is a better way to gauge talent than looking at players that overwhelmed less talented competition.
5. College interest
– Players with college interest (regardless of school) got a bump. This is usually a good indication of talent, especially at positions that do not generate statistics.

As you can see, the 2011 WBN All-Kentucky team has some familiar names on it. Trinity and Scott County put several players on the list on their way to the 6A State Championship, with nine Shamrocks and five Cardinals getting the nod. Highlands and Bowling Green also fared well with three players on the list apiece. Congratulations to all of the individuals on the 2011 All-State team.
