SEC Basketball Power Rankings: 1/1 Edition

1.  (LW-1) #3 Kentucky  13-1  (defeated Lamar 86-64, defeated #4 Louisville  69-62):  Kentucky establishes themselves as the class of the SEC with impressive wins over a pair of Cardinal teams.  Louisville was the second top five team Kentucky has knocked off this season and I doubt any other team in the country can claim two top five wins already.  The thing is, Teague and Jones are still not at the top of their games.  It’s scary how good Kentucky can be.  THIS WEEK:  1/3 vs Arkansas-Little Rock in Louisville, 1/7  vs South Carolina

"#8 Missouri  13-0  (defeated Old Dominion  75-68):  Like Kentucky, Mizzou found themselves in a dog fight with the ODU Monarchs, but the Tigers pulled out the win to remain one of the few undefeated teams in the nation.  Kim English is a beast from beyond the 3-point line, hitting 54.4% of his treys.  This week, we will find out how good the Tigers really are.  (THIS WEEK:  1/3 vs Oklahoma, 1/7 @ #25  Kansas State"

2.  (LW-3)  #14  Mississippi State  13-2  (lost to #7  Baylor  54-52, defeated Utah State  66-64):  Some may question my decision to move Mississippi State above Florida when both teams went 1-1 this week.  Simple, I am more impressed with MSU’s loss to Baylor than Florida’s loss to Rutgers.  It should be noted that MSU held Baylor close more than 20 points below their season average.  THIS WEEK:  1/7  @ Arkansas

3.  (LW-2)  #10  Florida  11-3  (lost to Rutgers 85-83, defeated Yale  90-70):  Simply put, the Rutgers loss was not a good loss for UF and Florida has to get Patric Young more involved in the offense.  As of now, Florida’s top three scorers are all guards.  Simply put, Patric Young is being misused.  He should be averaging 17 a game instead of 12.  THIS WEEK:  1/3  vs UAB,  1/7  @ Tennessee

4.  (LW-4)  LSU  10-3  (defeated Grambling State  69-37):  LSU has now won seven games in a row and have given up a stingy 52.3 points a game over that span,  Impressive.  LUS also defeated the same Rutgers team that defeated Florida on the same floor.  Impressive.  I wanted to move LSU up but could not do it in the end, but I think they do belong at number four now, because I was uncertain before.  THIS WEEK:  1/2  vs #24  Virginia, 1/7  vs Ole Miss

5.  (LW-5)  Alabama  10-3  (defeated Jacksonville 72-55):  Looks like Alabama is back to playing defense the Anthony Grant way.  This team really has just two to three scoring options so defense is going to have to stay a must for this team.  If another scorer developed, this could be a Sweet 16 talent level team.  THIS WEEK:  1/3 @ Georgia Tech, 1/7 @ Georgia

6.  (LW-7)  Vanderbilt 9-4  (defeated #13 Marquette 74-57):  Now this was the Vandy team we have heard about all season.  Have to admit it was an impressive win to beat down Marquette on their home floor.  That makes up for a lot.  THIS WEEK:  1/2 vs Miami (OH), 1/7 vs Auburn

7.  (LW-6)  Arkansas  10-3  (defeated Charlotte 80-67, defeated Texas Southern 77-49):  Arkansas really did not do anything to lose a spot, but was too impressed with Vandy win to not reward them and move them up.  Thing is, we still don’t know how good Arkansas is on 1.1 as they have beaten absolutely no one of note.  THIS WEEK:  1/3 vs Savannah, 1/7 vs #14 Mississippi State

"Texas A&M  9-3 (defeated Arkansas Tech  76-58):  I really don’t know what to say.  Texas A&M defeated the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys.  The Wonder Boys.  What does that even mean?  THIS WEEK:  1/2 @ # 7 Baylor, 1/7 @ Iowa State"

8.  (LW – 10)  Georgia  9-5  (defeated Winthrop 92-86 OT, defeated Delaware State 58-51):  Mark Fox getting the hang of his Bulldogs barely beating mediocre teams.  But this makes 5 straight wins.  Got to reward that, right?  THIS WEEK:  1/7 vs Alabama

9.  (LW – 8)  Mississippi  9-4  (lost to Dayton  62-50):  The wheels starting to come off the Ole Miss bandwagon with their third loss in a row.  THIS WEEK:  1/3 vs SMU, 1/7 @ LSU

10. (LW – 9)  Auburn  9-3  (lost to UTEP  83-76, defeated Georgia Southern 78-75):  See Mississippi for note about things starting to get real.  THIS WEEK:  1/2 vs Bethune Cookman, 1/4 @ Florida State, 1/7 @ Vanderbilt

11.  (LW – 11)  South Carolina 7-6  (defeated Wofford 57-45, defeated USC Upstate  72-66):  Have to admit I did not think South Carolina would get to 10 years on the season, but they are proving to be tougher than expected.  THIS WEEK:  1/3 vs South Carolina State, 1/7 @ #3 Kentucky

12.  (LW-12) Tennessee  6-6  (defeated Citadel 86-55):  Perhaps the addition of Jarnell Stokes has inspired the rest of his future team mates.  Will be interesting to see what Stokes can do with this team. THIS WEEK:  1/2 vs Chattanooga,  1/4 @ Memphis, 1/10 @ #10 Florida
