Well people, I want to make sure you Festivus followers aren’t disenfranchised by all the Christmas spirit on the site this week. Since, as Paul mentioned earlier, it is Festivus today (how fortunate!) and we’re going to celebrate. Before I start though, I just heard a few readers thinking “What’s Festivus?” So For the younger, non-Seinfeldian generation that didn’t watch the YouTube video, here’s a breakdown: Festivus is the secular holiday created by the TV show Seinfeld, designed for people to participate in the spirit of the holiday season without the hub-bub and commercialism created by corporate American and Coca-Cola surrounding “Christmas” and “Hanukkah”…
As part of the tradition, families gather around the “Festivus Pole”, the Christmas tree replacement, and participate in rituals including “Feats of Strength” and my personal favorite, “The Airing of Grievances”.
Since we’re all family (and my sister already won the Feats of Strength earlier this evening) let’s air some grievances La Famia!
1) Ok I’m going to sort of leave the Louisville peeps alone, this isn’t about airing grievances with them, it’s about grievances with those you love – I talked a lot of trash to IU fans (hey they started it) and it bit me in the butt. So I will be biting my tongue and want all other UK fans to do the same when it comes to Louisville. Let’s let our teams actions speak for themselves. We know who’s a better team and after the win next weekend, well – talk ALL you want – it’ll be much more fun.
2) Its one loss so far but there will be more. Hopefully, none come in March or April. This team is good. They’re young, but they’re good. When I turn on the post game show and hear all the old-timer Kentucky fans complaining about how the team is going down the crapper – all I think is IT IS NOVEMBER/DECEMBER! Hush, get over it. Media hypes a team, you buy into it, and then you have unreasonable expectations. This team will win a lot of games, but you should have never expected to win ALL of them. They’ll lose a few more and I expect you to take the losses as well as you handle the wins. Until March, they’re learning ops and the team will just get better from them. It’ll be ok.
3) Are we coaches or fans? Well, here’s the difference… coaches are paid to be there and fans pay to be there. Maybe more Kentucky fans need to be paid to be there or for their opinion but every decision is speculated, combed over, and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Point Guarded (the basketball equivalent of Monday Morning Quarterbacking) – hindsight is wonderful and WAY easier. If they don’t guard the in bound, they don’t foul, I have to assume it was for a reason until I hear otherwise, I trust the team to the coach. That means I also trust his decision-making skills in all aspects way more than mine or yours.
4) I’ve only managed to swindle my way into Lower Rupp once time, but let me tell you the view from the seats is the only nice thing about it. The atmosphere is HORRIBLE (other than the student section) and I’ll take my upper crowd and “hand binoculars” any day over the stiffs in the lower seats. Feeling bad about standing and cheering is never something someone should experience and yes, you have paid good money for your seat, but that’s the space you CAN sit in, it doesn’t mean you HAVE TO occupy it with your tuccous.
5) This one is very similar to my grievance concerning coaching but someone at the organization is paid LOTS of money to determine what design the team should wear. They are paid for their consulting time and that design work. Fans that want to argue about the uniforms should stop. Worry about what you are wearing to the games and focus there first. Once all the fans quit showing up in pink “Kentucky” shirts, then we can start talking about stripes versus no stripes, black versus blue, denim – ok, I will let those criticisms slide.
Ok, so that’s my list – like I said, we’re family, I hope I don’t offend you but I want you and in turn me to be better and stronger. Grievances have been aired and its up to you to do something about them. If you are offended, well like family, I’ll still be here tomorrow when you come see the ones you really do like and yes, I’ll post that video of the feats of strength rite quick, until then avederszain and Good Night!
