Jorts, Boogie and Mitt Romney: The New Power Trio
It’s bad to mix sports and politics but I have to report the news. I will not do any political commentary on this section of the headlines for fear of dividing Big Blue Nation. So I will stick strictly to the facts.
Two of UK’s all time favorite basketball players, Josh Harrellson and DeMarcus Cousins, made it to a Mitt Romney fundraiser that was held in Kentucky yesterday. Boogie even presented the presidential candidate hopeful with a Kentucky Wildcat hat. Romney later told Jorts that he could be a Wildcat fan. To be fair, if Romney would have been in Louisville he would have been the biggest Cardinal fan you ever saw. Did I say that? Ooops.
I do think this whole thing is very cool. It seems that Jorts and Boogie have adopted Kentucky as their new home state. Both college stars have been spending a lot of time in Kentucky ever since the NBA has be on hold. This flies in the face of UK and Calipari haters that claim that the players he recruits are here for one year and then gone. These two clearly love the state of Kentucky and the basketball team. After all, Cousins was also in New York City to watch the Cats dismantle the Jayhawks.
Could this be a sign of things to come? Jorts for governor and Boogie for lieutenant governor? They have my vote.
Headlines:
-Luke Winn from Sports Illustrated takes a look at the Cats and says that the Tarheels are #1 right now and should be. He also states that UNC will probably win on December 3, but he also says that UK is the future #1 team and will be better than Carolina in March. He also says Anthony Davis is an alien sent from outer space to dominate and block shots. I cannot argue that point.
–Count Bill Self as impressed. The Kansas coach keeps telling everybody within earshot that Kentucky may be the best team he has ever seen. We know, Bill. We know.
-The only way you are going to see the Wildcats play the Penn State Nittany Lions is on ESPN3. Make sure you charge your laptops. Unless you want to watch the football game, but why put yourself through such pain.
– If you aren’t impressed with Tim Tebow yet, then there is something wrong with you. He now is 4-1 as a starter and has the Broncos tied with the Raiders atop the AFC West at 5-4. Is he exciting to watch for most of the game? No. But if you need a game winning drive, he is your man.
Sorry Paul.
-As if we weren’t sick enough of child molestation stories in sports, another one has reared it’s ugly head. Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine has been accused by two ball boys for molesting them from the late 1970’s through the 1990’s, which is a very long time and runs into adulthood. Fine has been put on administrative leave and his head coach, Jim Boeheim is supporting his longtime assistant and said that the allegations were false and was very upset with the situation, he even went as far as to state that the allegations were all about money. I’m sick of reading and writing about such sordid things. Read more here if you really want to.
-The SEC bounced back a little in basketball after a rugged start. #16 Alabama defeated Maryland 62-42, Mississippi State upset #19 Texas A&M 69-60, and Florida came back after losing to Ohio State to beat North Florida 91-55.
-I’m ending these headlines on a sad note. Kurt Budke, the head coach of Oklahoma State’s women’s basketball team, died in a plane crash Thursday night along with assistant Miranda Serna while coming back from a recruiting trip. It has been only 10 years since the institution had an eerily similar tragedy happen when another plane crashed and killed 10 people associated with the men’s basketball team. Thoughts and prayers go out to their families as well as the other two men that were also in the plane.
