Streak Busters, the Bad Kind
We’ve seen UK break many negative streaks in football over the past five seasons. They’ve won at Auburn and Georgia, beat a top 10 team, and beat a #1 ranked team. All of those accomplishments hadn’t been done in 30+ years, and the losing streaks resulting from that was making it hard for UK to succeed in football. Even though UK was able to break those streaks, several still remained, and many thought this would be the year that UK broke either the Florida or Tennessee streak. They still have a chance to do so, but there is one streak they don’t want to see end. The five straight bowl berths is a school record. Never in history of UK football has this been done before. Not with Fran Curci, Jerry Claiborne, or even Paul Bear Bryant has UK had this much success in a 5-year span. All of those coaches had career winning records as college head coaches, and yet they could not even take UK to five straight bowls. If the Cats leave Athens, Georgia with a loss Saturday, that would end arguably one of the greatest streaks for a program that hasn’t had many good streaks. Georgia is a 31-point favorite over Kentucky this weekend and UK will have to play a near perfect game to even stay in the game with Georgia, but sometimes that’s all it takes. We’ve seen many 4th-quarter games go to the Cats because they were the underdog, and they fought till the bitter end to get those much needed wins over the years. This is one of those moments, and I expect to see the Cats fight with the Dawgs tooth and nail.
Two Starters won’t make trip to Athens
Starting DE/LB Ridge Wilson and safety Martavius Neloms won’t make trip to Georgia due to injury. Wilson has emerged as one of UK’s most consistent pass-rushers this year, and UK really need him to keep pressure on Georgia QB Aaron Murray, who’s thrown for 27 TD’s already this year. Neolms has been a solid safety for UK this year, playing both the run and pass well, and freshman safety Miles Simpson may see his first significant playing time this weekend. LB/S Winston Guy is recovering from his shoulder injury and is expected to start against the Bulldogs.
Cats Sign Three in Basketball
UK officially announced the signing of its three committed 2012 recruits today who have signed their letters-of-intent. Here’s what Coach Cal had to say on center Willie Cauley:
“At 7-feet tall, Willie has great feet and great hands,” Calipari said. “He’s a wide receiver on the football team. When he starts zeroing in on this sport, I think people are going to be surprised at how good he really is. He?s got his best basketball ahead of him.”
On Goodwin:
“Archie is a combo guard who can really score the ball,” Calipari said. “I love his athleticism and length. He plays kind of like Tyreke Evans, but can shoot it more consistent at this stage in his career than Tyreke could.”
On Poythress:
“When Alex is at his best, because of his size and athleticism, he’s as good as anybody in the country,” Calipari said. “He is really athletic, and when he’s got his motor running, he can score at will.”
