Elton Alexander is not seeing the Kentucky Wildcats through big blue glasses
By Paul Jordan
Every now and then, we feel the need to call out certain members of the media and suggest that maybe they should not vote in the AP poll anymore. Today’s instance is Elton Alexander of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer who sees Kentucky as the 9th best team in the country, which the lowest of any of the 65 voters in the AP poll. Alexander’s poll was all over the place as he also had Florida 4th, which would suggest his reasons skills may be slipping. Hey, opinions are opinions, and everyone is entitled to theirs but maybe the managing editor of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer should gently sit Elton down, and maybe suggest his good voting days are behind him. It’s a tough conversation for sure, but if you do it with peace and love like we did when we had to tell Grandpa that he could not drive anymore, Elton can at least maintain his dignity.
Max Smith? Morgan Newton? Joker Phillips has a decision to make concerning his QB for Saturday’s game against Ole Miss and apparently it may be a game time decision. Look, I get the reason for the secrecy and I can handle not knowing until game time personally. Plus you don’t want to tip your hand and let Ole Miss know who to prepare for. Make them prepare for both QB’s.
But for Joker’s sake, I seriously hope he is not this noncommittal for a couple of reasons. If it is going to be Max Smith, he needs to be getting about 90% of the snaps in practice or you risk throwing out a poorly prepared QB on Saturday. I’m not privy to the UK practices, but I just hope that this “indecision” is just for the media and Ole Miss. I really hope a decision has been made if not by now, but very soon so the starter can be properly vetted in practice. Just saying.
Harold Carmichael was the tallest WR in the NFL at 6’8 and for curiosity’s sake, I really want to see footage of 7’0 Willie Cauley playing football. He has 1100 yards receiving for his Kansas football team, but the big story is he is Kentucky’s second commit in the 2012 class. ESPN actually has an excellent article on Cauley so you can get to know the newest basketball Wildcat a bit better. And here is a quiz for you. Can you pick Cauley out of the football huddle below? Consider it a “Where’s Waldo” type of thing:
Tomorrow nights exhibition game against Transylvania will settle a huge score. About 100 years ago, UK/Transy was the college basketball rivalry in Lexington and the all time series is tied at 7-7. Here is a bit more on the once red hot rivalry.
It appears that Joker Phillips is close to losing one of the commitments from his 2012 class as Georgia RB Shadrach Thornton now lists Georgia Tech and Vandy as his leaders. It does not bode well for UK when that Thornton was asked about his commitment to the Wildcats, he had this to say:
“I have to get in touch with them and let them how I am feeling. I don’t believe in stringing anybody along. I have to talk to them before I say anything.”
Oooof. Looks like Joker has a “Let’s just be friends” talk in his near future.
