Many of you have certainly heard the crazy story about Anthony Davis. Over one summer he went from being a 6’3 guard into a 6’11 forward. Went in one summer from being a no name to the #1 prospect in the country by almost all recruiting services. This is was a very strange scenario for anyone that follows recruiting. One day you are reading about how Austin Rivers is the best player in the country, then the next day you are like “Anthony who???”
After everyone had excepted the fact that Anthony Davis was for real, that’s when the rumors of how Kentucky was going to pay Davis over $200,000 to go to UK. Those rumors started all thanks to a bone head reporter from the Chicago Sun-Times, who stated he had “sources.” That of course was all false, and in the end Davis did eventually chose to play his college basketball at the University of Kentucky
Now onto some real preview things on Anthony Davis. After arriving on Kentucky’s campus, Davis has gained 25 pounds of muscle making him a much more noticeable force to be reckoned with in the paint. With Davis being a former guard he has the unique ability as a big man to be a good ball handler, and match that Jones above average ball handling skills, you my friend have one of the best, if not the best, backcourts in the country.
Anthony Davis’ wingspan could go toe-to-toe with an Eagles wingspan. He has a wingspan of 7’4 which will make him a blocking monster! With his great ability to block shots that makes the opponent think twice about going to the rim on him. This will also be almost impossible to keep him off the glass. With all this talent that Anthony Davis posses, it is kind of preposterous to say that he has tremendous upside, but the truth of the matter is he probably has more potential than any player in college basketball today, except for Michael Porter maybe.
What To Expect This Year
What is to be expected from Anthony Davis this year, will be a starter that could play a lot of minutes although you have Kyle Wiltjer sitting waiting on the bench. I think he will average around 20.3 points, 13 rebounds and 4.2 blocks per game. Don’t be surprised if you see Davis take 2-3 three point shots a game, that way it could open things up down low for Terrence Jones. Many of field goals will be dunks just because of his wingspan and height.
Calipari on Davis
“Anthony is a tremendous shot blocker with great size and length. He can make 3-pointers, dribble the ball and he can get up and down the court faster than some of our guards because of his long, looping strides. He’s a different player than Marcus Camby, but he’s physically ahead of where Marcus was to start his freshman season.”
