WBN College Football Weekend Wrap Up

facebooktwitterreddit

The biggest news to com from the bye week was the comments from athletic director Mitch Barnhart. He put all of his faith in coach Joker Phillips and he stated that Phillips will “absolutely” be back at Kentucky.More can be read about this at the Sporting News.

It’s time to move on in Wildcat world. All of the remaining games, besides Georgia, are winnable in my opinion. Hopefully the Cats have partially figured out whatever they needed to fix on the offensive side of the ball.

The attendance against Jacksonville State in Commonwealth figures to be a little underwhelming considering the opening of Keeneland, the bad football the Cats have played and the quality of the opponent. Never the less, I along with every here at the WBN will be watching and cheering for our Cats.

Loserville drops Third Straight in NFL Stadium

Louisville fans really thought by year two of the Charlie Strong Era that their beloved Cards would be vying for a BCS bowl. No, really, some of them did. Despite the delusions of these Bir Brains, the Cards have been dreadful despite wins over Murray State and some other team that I cannot seem to remember right now.

The offense for the Cards has been putrid all season long and Saturday was no exception. Teddy Bridgewater, whom many thought was the next John Elway, threw for no touchdowns and one interception against Cincinnati in Paul Brown Stadium in the 25-16 loss to the Bearcats.

Something that you will not find in the local media in Louisville is criticism of Cardinal coach Charlie Strong. Strong’s play calling and decision making makes you think he is about as senile as Rick Pitino at times. After Teddy Bridgewater had already started the game, played the entire game and seemed solidified at the position, Strong sends in injured Will Stein after a three week absence for absolutely no reason at the end of the game.

Stein was ineffective as always and the Cards faltered, unable to score.

The only saving grace for Louisville is that they play in the Big East. But this team is so bad, the cake walk that is their conference won’t even be able to salvage their season.

Boring Blowouts All Weekend

None of the major BCS contenders were even challenged over the weekend. LSU blew out Tennessee, Alabama blew out Mississippi, Oklahoma blew out Kansas and Wisconsin blew out Indiana.

No last minute heroics were needed, but the Clemson at Maryland game was exciting if you hate defense and love offense. The Tigers beat the Terepins 56-45.

South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore is out for the season with a knee injury. The door is now wide open for the Georgia Bulldogs to win the SEC East and get trounced by either LSU or Alabama in the SEC title game.

Florida took their third loss in a row against Auburn and Will Muschamp is already feeling the heat in Gainesville. Three losses in a row is unheard of for the Gator Nation.

BCS Top 10 Poll

As promised I have the OFFICIAL BCS standings. No surprises at the top as the first rankings were released. The biggest surprise to me is how Boise State is ahead of Wisconsin. I am looking forward to those two teams meeting in a bowl game. Hopefully.

It seems we are headed towards a SEC vs. Big 12 match up in the BCS Championship game.

1. LSU

2. Alabama

3. Oklahoma

4. Oklahoma State

5. Boise State

6. Wisconsin

7. Clemson

8. Stanford

9. Arkansas

10. Oregon

Our top 3 teams still will remain untested until November fifth when LSU visits Alabama and Oklahoma will face a high powered Texas A&M offense on that same day.

Conference count: 3 teams from the SEC, 2 teams from the Big 12, 2 teams from the PAC 12, 1 team from the Big 10, 1 team from the ACC and Boise State.

Picks

I did quite well again, only losing the NFL game. I went 4-1 for the week and I am 23-9 on the season.

NFL Note: This was an exciting weekend of NFL football, quite the opposite of the college weekend. The Pats, 49ers, Bucs and Giants all won in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The Lions were handed their first loss in heartbreaking fashion as the Niners improved to 5-1. Lions coach Jim Schwartz almost put the beat down on Niners coach Jim Harbaugh after a rough handshake and a bit of a shove. Take a look and see if it warranted the reaction:

I think Harbaugh gets a pass. But believe, Schwartz and company will not forget this come playoff time.

The Week to Come

The Cats are back in action and we all see if improvements are made. It’s the last non-conference game and if it is lost, then so is the season. If a team has ever needed a home crowd to pick them up, it’s this one.

The Dirty Flithy Cards take on Rutgers as the teams fight for attention on Friday night against high school football.

Oklahoma State faces a tough Missouri team and Auburn might give LSU a bit of a challenge. Maybe not.

Stay tuned all day long on the WBN. Tonight at midnight I will have up a heated post directed towards a popular UK website as they try and undermine Joker Phillips and his job.
