Big Blue All-Stars versus Union College recap
By Editorial Staff
I finally got to see the Big Blue All-Stars in action which featured former Kentucky Wildcats among other standout basketball players from the state of Kentucky, like Shelvin Mack a Lexington, Kentucky native. I got to see Kenneth Faried AKA the Manimal dunk all over the Pulaski County High School’s gym. I got to see Rajon Rondo throw lobs without even looking at the rim or anything remotely resembling a player out on the court. I got to see Jodie Meeks throw up threes from two steps over mid-court. I got to see Brandon Knight do the same thing while he was shaking and baking. I got to see DeMarcus Cousins up to his old antics of clowning around, and I got to see Josh Harrellson and DeAndre Liggins, beloved Kentucky players from a year ago…
Sadly it was against my current place of higher learning, Union College.
Sadly, I wanted to upload some dunks from Kenneth Faried, because despite Cousins scoring 40 points to add to the total point total of the Big Blue All-Stars to 125, to Union’s score of 104.
I got to cover the game live using the media pass because I work within the Bulldog Sports Network, and got to sit courtside beside the Wazoo Sports crew, and let me tell you. The game was a blast. Instead of recapping a game where it was basically a run-and-gun dunk-off against Union, I’ll just hit on a few points.
Kenneth Faried should be in a dunk contest sometime in the next few years in the league. The guy is known for getting rebounds, but the guy can dunk something fierce. He has no regard for human life. At one point Rondo caught the ball and while his back was turned and he looked into the stands he threw the ball behind his head, Faried came out of nowhere and grabbed the ball and slammed it home. He also had a windmill where he brought the ball somewhere around his ankles and jammed it in…He is a BEAST, and the most athletic and impressive player on the floor by far.
DeMarcus Cousins had 40 points but I bet 30 of them was because he was cherry picking at half court the whole time, but he seems a lot skinnier and quicker than he was a year ago. He’s also worked on his range as he stepped back and drained a couple of threes (it was from high school range last night) but as I’ve heard he’s done this several times throughout the tour.
Josh Harrellson still loves it all, the fans, the media hoopla and everything surrounding Kentucky basketball. While the other players were basically ushered into the arena with people trying to get to them, Harrellson literally walked through the front doors like an ordinary person would and signed anything thrown in front of him. He clowned around with the guys from Wazoo all night.
Ravi Moss the former Kentucky walk-on who loved the three-ball was the coach for the Big Blue All-Stars last night and once he walked to the scorer’s table when Rondo made a bad play and he put his hands on his hips and did the “Tubby” stomp. I kid you not, both Jodie Meeks and Rondo immediately looked up from play. It was hilarious to see them react so quickly to the ‘stomp’. The fans who got it, absolutely loved it. Moss is a great guy.
Jodie Meeks, Brandon Knight and Shelvin Mack all were jacking threes from beyond NBA range and draining it. It took Jodie a few minutes to get going, but when he did it was like Jodie Meeks of old. It was a lot of fun to watch because me personally, I’m a huge Meeks fan, so getting to meet and greet with him after the game was a great experience.
So even though Union got blown out, which I expected—all of the players were very happy for the opportunity. Ryan Young, one of the few bright spots for Union and a crowd favorite said he was bright eyed the whole game, where DeAndre Liggins and Brandon Knight switched on and off of him.
So while I didn’t get any dunks from Faried to upload for you guys because I was filming for Union, it was a great experience, and if you have a chance to go see these guys do so because it really is a special experience.
