Kentucky’s offense is the Definition of “Inept”
Guess what? Out of 120 teams in the FBS, Kentucky ranks 119th in total offense, Kent State is the only team worse than the Wildcats in that regard.
The line can’t block, the wide receivers can’t catch, the quarterback can’t throw and at times the running backs can’t run. You cannot tell me that every player on offense is talent-less and clueless. It looks to me as if these players either are not being coached well or there is a disconnect between the coaches and the players.
This is going to be a tough two weeks for Randy Sanders and especially for Joker Phillips. Usually the Bye Week is for resting, reps and film. This week the coaching staff will have to answer questions about how and why the offense still cannot function and whether or not they feel as if their jobs are safe.
The offensive game against South Carolina was one of the most atrocious and uninspired of performances that I have ever seen from a Wildcat team let alone a college football team ever. Never in one moment of the game did I feel confident that Kentucky would score a touchdown on offense.
I really, really like Joker Phillips. He bleeds blue and he is a nice guy. I rooted for him to succeed but he has shown me nothing up to this point. Yeah, he went to a bowl game last season but the team finished 6-7. This season was supposed to be the season to “Rise” and break out in the SEC. Fan expectations were high, but not anymore. If Joker fails to get people to come to games, which is what it looks like as of now, then he will be gone, possibly by the end of this season.
There is a lot this team needs to fix and they have an extra week to do it. This offense looks like it needs another off season to get things right.
Don’t forget Cards fans, you Suck too
Louisville went into North Carolina with a cloud hanging over their heads. Rumor was that Charlie Strong had gotten into a fist fight with his offensive coordinator Mike Sanford earlier in the week during practice. Sanford did not go on the trip and another coach called the plays for the Cards. Word on the street was that Cards went with a new offensive coordinator.
But after the 14-7 loss the Cards suffered, something funny happened. Charlie Strong came out and said that a fight had not occurred and that Sanford would return to duty next week when they play Cincinnati. Nobody from the media pressed him about this, nobody asked why the coach was absent, nobody asked why the sudden change of heart. People just took Strong’s word for it, nodded their heads and continued with the presser.
If you don’t live in Louisville then you don’t understand the control Louisville athletic director has over the local media. They are scared to death of him and they will not report bad news about the University of Louisville. The Karen Sypher trial was barely covered and Jurich ran a radio station off the air because they criticized Steve Kragthorpe too much only to replace it with his own Cardinal friendly propaganda station. I feel like I am living in Russia in the 1920’s.
Ok, I’m off of my soapbox. Louisville’s offense might not have been as bad as UK’s but it was close. The Cards did not score until the final minutes of the fourth quarter and the best QB in the world (according to those dopes) threw a late game INT to give the game to the Tar Heels.
The Cards are one of the most undisciplined teams in the NCAA. They had more penalty yards in the third quarter than offensive yards. They had 9 penalties for 78 yards overall.
UK might suck but so does our arch rival. Too bad they beat us this year or we would have a little more to cheer about.
Oklahoma wants some Love, Doesn’t get any
The Sooners beat the #11 Texas Longhorns 55-17. They made the statement that they belong in one of the top two spots in the country. The AP poll didn’t listen. Despite the impressive showing, Oklahoma is still relegated to the third spot behind LSU and Alabama.
There were no big shake ups in the top 10 this week but something interesting did happen in the top 25: for the first time since December 6, 1982, there are no Florida teams in the top 25. No Gators, no Seminoles and no Hurricanes. That’s almost 30 years that’s as long as I have been alive on planet earth.
FSU is underachieving, Miami is feeling the affects of looming sanctions, and Florida is trying to regroup in the post-Urban Meyer era. It’s a rough year to be a fan in the Sunshine State. It’s even rougher being a fan in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Top 10 Poll
1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Wisconsin
5. Boise State
6. Oklahoma State
7. Stanford
8. Clemson
9. Oregon
10. Arkansas
Conference Count: SEC 3, Big 10 1, Pac 12 2, ACC 1, Big 12 2 and Boise State
BCS: The first official BCS rankings come out next Sunday. I will start using the BCS rankings on a weekly basis instead of the AP top 10 because the BCS is all that really matters in the bowl picture.
Picks
I went 4-2 on the week thanks to Kentucky’s no show and the first victory of the year for WKU, so good for them. WKU, not Kentucky.
I am 19-8 on the season and will hopefully improve next week. Luckily I won’t have to pick the UK game since the Cats are off. Hooray.
NFL Note: While everybody is rightly falling in love with the Bills and the Lions, how about them Niners? The San Francisco 49ers improved to 4-1 after a total beat down of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Frisco. Ex-Stanford Cardinal head coach Jim Harbaugh has breathed life back into this once proud franchise and has resurrected the pro career of former #1 draft pick Alex Smith. Think he would be interested in coming to UK? It’s just a thought.
The Week to Come
UK is off and the Cards welcome the Bearcats in a battle for Big East superiority. That’s an Oxymoron.
Oklahoma, Alabama and LSU will all coast over their next opponents. The Tigers and the Tide don’t have much to worry about until they play each other Oklahoma’s next challenge isn’t until November 5th when they host Texas A&M.
Hopefully Joker and the boys can weather the storm this week but it wouldn’t surprise me if some massive changes were made on the team and on the coaching staff.
