Who needs the NBA when the Kentucky Wildcats NBA stars are coming to a gym near you? The first two games of the “Big Blue All Star Tour” are in the books and to no ones surprise, the good guys are off to a 2-0 start. The tour got underway Saturday against Pikeville and DeMarcus Cousins led the team in scoring with 28 points. Former Morehead star Kenneth Faried had 23 points and Brandon Knight tossed in 14 points. DeMarcus Cousins had several highlight dunks as evidenced by this one where he destroys a Pikeville defender:
On Sunday, the BBAS took on Alice Lloyd College and came away with a 115-87 win. Faried led the way with 33 points while Boogie Cousins had 31 points. Cousins nailed back to back to back treys early in the game and all of Brandon Knight’s 12 points came on three pointers. You have to love this play where Rajon Rondo passes off the glass for a Faried dunk:
Dakari Johnson is one of the top big men in the class of 2014and he has his sights set on the Bluegrass. Johnson will make visits in November to both Kentucky and Louisville and here he talks a bit about his recruitment:
Highlands QB and future Wildcat Patrick Towles is putting up some mind boggling numbers this season and this weeks game was another example. Towles played less than a half in Highland’s 79-0 win over Pendleton and had this statline: 14-19 for 275 yards and 7 TD’s. That was in less than a half. Wow.
The above picture was taken after Kentucky defeated then number #1 LSU in 2007, which was Kentucky’s brightest football moment in the last decade. Some people are saying that Kentucky’s 54-3 loss to South Carolina is the low point. I know that it is a bye week for Kentucky football but the next two weeks could be the defining moments of the Joker Phillip’s era. Lots of people are documenting Kentucky’s football troubles this season and there is a lot of loud talk that “changes” must be made. And that is the problem with a lot of blogs and even Kentucky beat writers at this point in the season.
Everyone wants to make loud statements that “change must come now” but no one can offer up any suggestions on what kind of change should come other than to fire Joker Phillips or to copy the movie “Moneyball”. And we have the whole “I told you so contingent” who actually seem pleased that Kentucky football is in a spiral because they allowed their negativity to predict a bad season for Kentucky and now, feel the need to bump their chest over the fact they seemingly foresaw this disaster of a football season. When you press those people for what should happen, you get the vague “we must change” mantra. In the words of the great Chuck D, all of this postulating over Kentucky football is nothing but “talking loud and saying nothing“
If you read just one Kentucky football column this week, check out football editor Kyle’s story on What will it take to right the ship? Instead of being ridiculous and crying for something that will not happen (like Mike Leach to Kentucky), Kyle has some viable suggestions that can be implemented over the bye weeks. I know I have been called delusional as well for saying there are still at least five winnable games on the schedule the rest of the way. Yes, Tennessee losing Tyler Bray makes that game winnable. I am not saying this because I have aspirations about Kentucky’s offense, but because the remaining schedule is extremely weak and every team remaining has major warts.
Undue negativity helps no one at this point and Joker Phillips is not going to get fired mid-season. How about we ride this season out, support our team with the same passion that you support basketball, and then we will sort out the football “changes” in the off season. Sound like a plan?
