WBN SEC Football Power Rankings: 10/9 Edition
Paul usually is the one that gives you the weekly SEC Football Power Rankings but he is still partying for his birthday, so you are stuck with me. Sorry. I will do my best to fill his shoes. Although, I have pretty big feet. So the shoes will be over flowing. What does all this mean? I have no idea. Let’s get to it.
1. (LW 1) #1 LSU (6-0, 3-0) ) (Defeated Florida 41-11)- LSU continues to destroy every team in their path as the November 5th match up against Alabama gets closer week by week. The Tigers looked unstoppable against the Gators. The defense held Florida to just 11 points and the rushing duo of Demps and Rainey to just 113 yards. The Tigers continue to make the case as the best team in the country. There is no reason for the Tigers to slip up next week against a UT team that had trouble scoring against Georgia. This week 10/15 @ Tennessee
2. (LW 2) #2 Alabama (6-0, 3-0) (Defeated Vanderbilt 34-0)- The Crimson Tide’s AJ McCarron threw for 4 touchdown passes in his most impressive outing so far this season. Yes, it was against Vandy, but if this QB continues to gain confidence and is able to get the ball to his talented receivers in order to compliment their fantastic running attack led by Trent Richardson, then I don’t see any reason that they can’t overtake LSU. I think ‘Bama has the edge in the passing game over LSU and they continue to improve. The D pitched a shut out, solidifying their spot as the country’s top defensive unit. This week 10/15 @ Ole Miss
3. (LW 4) #10 Arkansas (5-1, 1-1) (Defeated Auburn 38-14)- The third best team in the SEC is also the third best team in their division. I can’t see Arkansas being in the SEC Championship game but they are a damn good football team. In a showdown of passing game vs. running game, passing game dominated. Tyler Wilson threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns. The Razorback defense accounted for 3 interceptions and made the Tigers pay each time. Their D is emerging, too bad they already lost against Alabama a few weeks ago. This dominance is not so much telling of how good Arkansas is but actually of how good the Tide is. This week 10/15 Bye
4. (LW 5) #18 South Carolina (5-1, 2-1) (Defeated Kentucky 54-3)- Looks like the QB switch worked. Well, it did against the Wildcats. Connor Shaw looked like Tim Tebow against the Kentucky defense, shredding it for 311 yards in the air and four touchdown passes. The Gamecocks racked up a total of 639 yards of total offense. Marcus Lattimore joined in the fun by rushing for 102 yards and Alshon Jeffery had 95 yards receiving and two touchdown catches. The defense forced five turnovers in a completely dominant performance. This Week 10/15 @ Mississippi State
5. (LW 7) Georgia (4-2, 3-1) (Defeated Tennessee 20-12)- After dropping to 0-2 to start the season, the Bulldogs are starting to find a bit of a groove. They are winners of four straight, two at home and two on the road, and have gotten consistently better each game. The calls for Mark Richt’s job have quieted down as the Dawgs are 3-1 in the SEC and 1-1 in the East. Quarterback Aaron Murray, the SEC’s pick to be the best QB in the league, is coming into his own and has thrown over 1,000 yards and 13 TD’s. The Bulldogs are a talented bunch and their own worst enemies. Their success lies with the defense, a unit which allowed 80 points in their first two games (losses) has allowed a combined 35 points in their four straight wins. Their remaining schedule is very favorable and could put them in an SEC title game. This week 10/15 @ Vanderbilt
6. (LW 3) #15 Auburn (4-2, 2-1) (Lost to Arkansas 38-14)- The biggest drop this week comes from Auburn and for good reason. The Tigers have yet to find a decent passing game despite one of top running offenses in the country with Michael Dyer. They amassed 291 rushing yards against the Razorbacks but only 104 passing yards. The Tigers also utilized four different quarterbacks in the game, all ineffective against a decent but not great Hog defense. We will continue to see them drop SEC games and out of the top 25 and out of a bowl game, something tough for a defending national champion to accept. This week 10/15 @ #17 Florida
7. (LW 6) #17 Florida (4-2, 2-2) (Lost to LSU 41-11)- The Gators continue to get a wake up call after dropping their second straight game by blow out fashion. This is the first time that Florida has lost by over 28 points in consecutive games in over two decades. The season ending injury to John Brantley saw them scrambling to find a passing game which led to the benching of freshman Jacoby Brissett for sophomore Tyler Burton. Their seemingly awesome running game is non-existent without their passing game. Welcome to the SEC Will Mushchamp. This week 10/15 vs. #15 Auburn
8. (LW 7) Vanderbilt (3-2, 1-2) (Lost to Alabama 34-0)– The only reasons that Vandy is this high are A). They have a winning record; and B). They have a win in the SEC. The Commodores got a rude awakening from Alabama after a soft early season schedule. It doesn’t get any easier. The ‘Dores visit a surging Bulldog team Between the Hedges. This week 10/15 @ Georgia
9. (LW 8) Tennessee (3-2, 0-2) (Lost to Georgia 20-12)- The Vols are batting .000 in the SEC. Their defense isn’t very good and their offense looked dreadful against a visiting Georgia team. Tyler Bray looked great against teams like Montana, Cincy and Buffalo, but has struggled against the two SEC defenses he has faced. Don’t look for him to improve against his next opponent. This week 10/15 vs. #1 LSU
10. (LW 10) Mississippi State (3-3, 0-3) (Defeated UAB 21-3)- Remember when this team was a Dark Horse to win the SEC West? Not anymore. These Bulldogs have little to no bight and resemble past MSU teams and not the one that won a huge bowl game last season. Look for them to be in this same spot next Sunday. Sure they beat UAB, but that team is 0-5 and the Bulldogs will drop to 0-4 after Saturday. This Week 10/15 vs. #18 South Carolina
11. (LW 11) Ole Miss (2-3, 0-2) (OFF)- The Rebels have looked dreadful for the most of the season. Things do not get any better as they face the nations #2 team at home. There is only one team in all of the SEC worse than them…This week 10/15 vs. #2 Alabama
12. (LW 12) Kentucky (2-4, 0-3) (Lost to South Carolina 54-3)- The Wildcats had the most embarrassing loss in the SEC this
week. The Cats are ranked 119 out of 120 teams in total offense, mustered only 96 total yards against the Gamecocks, and should have been shut out if it wasn’t for an early fumble on the kick off on the part of South Carolina. The Wildcats are one of the worst teams in all of college football. It pains me to say but it’s true. This week 10/15 Bye
