I love how Louisville Cardinal fans are SO proud of Rick Pitino's NCAA Title at Kentucky
By Paul Jordan
By now, I am convinced that there are not two college basketball fan bases that despise each other more than the Kentucky Wildcat and Louisville Cardinal contingents. Never has such a minority been so up in arms over a coaches comments as the Louisville fans are over Calipari’s recent comments that Kentucky Wildcat basketball, well dominates the state of Kentucky. Calipari’s official words were:
“It’s Kentucky throughout this whole state, and that’s what makes us unique.”
So now all the Louisville fans, all 40% of them in the city of Louisville, are rallying around their beleaguered coach, and totally forgetting that Pitino said basically the exact same thing 15 years ago, when he was coach at Kentucky:
“We’re a little like the Green Bay Packers. The entire state of Kentucky owns our basketball team.”
What strikes me most about this whole situation is the total implausibility of the Cardinal fan’s arguments. They have flooded the message boards with the same rallying cry: Pitino is the better coach. He has one NCAA title, while Calipari has none.
Seriously? It does my heart good to see that Louisville fans are so proud of Kentucky’s last NCAA title that they use it as a rallying point. And it kind of proves Calipari’s statements true once again.
Speaking of damaged Cardinal homers, I have to hand it to A Sea of Blue’s Ken Howlett. Ken is a good friend of this site and appears on our podcasts regularly (with his kids and his dog), but Ken has gotten an exclusive inside the scenes look at Rick Bozoich and Pitino’s attempt to smear John Calipari.
OK, I did not intend to make the morning five all about Pitino and Calipari, but you have to cut me some slack. It’s my birthday tomorrow and I will be away from the site the next few days so I had to get this out of my system. Just because I am gone does not mean you should be though. The rest of the WBN staff is going to pick up the slack and you won’t even miss me.
Now on to some real news:
Nerlens Noel will not be reclassifying into the 2012 class and will remain in the 2013 class. Noel is without a doubt one of the top players in the two classes and Kentucky would have had a good chance to land him. Noel says he will trim his list of teams soon however. As expected, Noel is hearing from everyone who is anyone, but has mentioned Kentucky, Florida, Syracuse, UConn and Providence among schools who have reached out.
Five star recruit 2013 Troy Williams is on campus in Lexington today. In case you are unfamiliar, here is the obligatory mixtape:
We love Brandon Knight and all, but he just got schooled by a four year old with a mean crossover dribble:
Even though Cody Jordan is just four years old, even he knows that there is just one basketball program in the commonwealth of Kentucky. Word.
I feel remiss about no football stories this morning, but we have more on the South Carolina game on the site later today, including my pick in the 2:00 PM version of “Know Your Enemy”. Spoiler alert: be prepared to call me delusional.
