Kentucky Wildcat Football: 4 Reasons We Can Lose to (or maybe beat) South Carolina and Live Another Day
By Paul Jordan
The Cats now sit at 2-3, not exactly what we had hoped for but in all honesty, not too far off from what we expected. Take away the loss to those Filthy f@&%-ing Cardinals and we sit right where everyone expected us to be. So why the Chicken Little “The sky is falling” routine? Because supposedly Joker is losing the fans? Because we don’t have a stunning, blue-eyed god to bail us out of every 3rd and long and make us all believe that UK football will one day be relevant? Bull, I say. People are freaking out because we as fans can’t handle the thought of a troubled season. It’s not just a UK thing, I have written articles recently lamenting the instant gratification craving, “get it done now or get out” mentality that fans across the country suffer from, so I’m not mad at you. But having a down year in a conference where we never plan on finishing higher than 3rd (especially now with the rumors of Auburn moving over) does not mean we need to start talking about who is replacing Joker or how we’ll never turn it around. Here’s my five reasons why we’ll somehow see the Sunday after the game, regardless of outcome.
1. We’ve lost to them before- Prior to last year’s amazing game, Kentucky had lost 10 straight against the Gamecocks. You know what happened the last four times we’ve lost to them? We still ended up doing okay. There are six more games after this, and all of them are arguably winnable.
2. They’re supposed to be better- This one’s kind of weak, as they were supposed to be better than us last year and we still won. Marcus Lattimore Derrick Locke, Alshon Jeffery= Randall Cobb….but the only problem is the Cocks still have those two. The offense will be hard pressed to keep up. remember all those horrible protection Morgan Newton has had? The Gamecocks D is one of the best in the conference at getting to the passer. So instead of the usual .056 seconds Newton usually has back there to freeze up will now be shaved down to a very slim .052 seconds. The one ray of hope here is SEC sack leader Melvin Ingram is doubtful with a sprained foot.
3. Inexperienced QB’s- and I’m not even talking about us. After the embarrassingly bad meltdown suffered by Columbia bar scene favorite Stephen Garcia in the Auburn game (9-23, 190 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT), the Ole Ball Coach has already told the media that sophomore Conner Shaw will be starting against the Cats. If we can rattle his cage early, it might lead to some in-game QB shuffling and a lack of offensive continuity. Have you met my friend Danny Trevathan? He’s a cybernetic organism from the future.
4. There are still six more games to play- Going 2-4 in the first six games might be bad, but it’s not a death sentence. If people start packing it up after this game, there will be much more disappointment in store. Even if this game is lost, the important part to remember is that it’s not over; there are more games to play and 18-22 year old kids need your support as much as any kid of your own. Don’t be a a-hole, support your team.
