WBN SEC Football Power Rankings: 10/2 Edition

facebooktwitterreddit

1.  (LW – 1)  #1  LSU  (5-0, 2-0) (defeated Kentucky  35-7) –  No reason for LSU to lose their top ranking in the country or in the WBN SEC Rankings after disposing of Kentucky with little to no effort.  The defense remains the strength of this team as they manhandled Kentucky and held them to just 158 total yards.  Jarrett Lee looked kind of shaky, but defense wins championships.  THIS WEEK:  10/8 vs #17 Florida

2.  (LW – 2) #2  Alabama  (5-0, 2-0) (defeated #12 Florida  38-10) –  At this point, we can pretty much make the standings #1 and #1A.  This score could have been a lot worse and Alabama now officially owns the Gators, blowing them out three straight times.  That nasty D held Florida’s rushing attack to just 15 yards or 390 yards less than they put up against Kentucky.  THIS WEEK:  10/8  vs Vanderbilt

3.  (LW – 5)  # 15 Auburn  (4-1, 2-0)  (defeated #10 South Carolina  16-13) –  Auburn finally got a nice defensive effort and needed it as the offense struggled against the Gamecocks.  Winning on the road at the #10 team has to be appreciated,   I’m still not sold on this Tiger team, but one thing is for sure:  They have a winners instinct and find a way to win these games.  THIS WEEK:  10/8 @ #10 Arkansas

4.  (LW – 6)  #10 Arkansas  (4-1, 0-1)  (defeated #14 Texas A&M 42-38)  Tyler Wilson passed for 510 yards against the Aggies and the Razorbacks are averaging 39.4 a game and have the 7th ranked passing attack in the country.  The defense is inconsistent, but the Hawgs have the firepower to outscore most teams.  THIS WEEK:  10/8  vs #15  Auburn

5.  (LW – 4)  #18  South Carolina  (4-1, 2-1)  (lost to #15 Auburn)  Face it, Stephen Garcia is dreadful.  He’s averaging 168 yards a gam and has 4 TD’s vs 9 INT’s this season.   Despite him, the Gamecocks are 4-1 on the season.  They have a decent defense and Marcus Lattimore.  South Carolina will have to find the way to get the ball to Alshon Jeffery, who can be one of the most electrifying WR’s in the country, but he only has 19 catches through 5 games.  THIS WEEK:  10/8  vs Kentucky

6.  (LW – 3)  #17  Florida ( 4-1, 2-1)  (lost to # 3 Alabama) –  Rough week for the Gators as Jeff Brantley may be lost for the season and freshman savior Jeff Driskel has looked, well like a true Freshman so far.  The Gators were made into a one dimensional team by Alabama and gained just 15 yards on the ground.  UF still has a fearsome ground attack, but Driskel has to grow up in a hurry.  The Gator’s defense is still solid although Alabama had their way with it.  THIS WEEK:  10/8:  @ #1 LSU

7.  (LW – 8)  Georgia  (3-2, 2-1) (defeated Mississippi State  24-10)   Guess who has snuck back into contention in the SEC East?  Not saying they are a powerhouse team, but Aaron Murray is playing very well and the defense has just allowed 23 points the last three games.  The Bulldogs are playing better than anyone else in the East and have the good grace to not have to play Alabama or LSU this season.  THIS WEEK:  10/8:  @ Tennessee

8.  (LW – 10)  Tennessee (3-1, 0-1)  (defeated Buffalo 41-10)  So far, Tennessee has whipped three mediocre teams and lost by 10 points to a decent team.  Tyler Bray looks really good, but once again, the Vols have beat no one yet.  This week will be interesting and the Vols will find that you can’t hide forever.  THIS WEEK:  10/8  vs Georgia

9.  (LW – 7)  Vanderbilt  (3-1, 1-1)  (OFF)  Bye week for the Commodores but it all gets real this week. THIS WEEK: 10/8  @ #2 Alabama

10.  (LW – 9)  Mississippi State  (2-3, 0-3) (lost to Georgia 24-10)   Rough season for the Bulldogs as they were a preseason top 25 team.  Chris Relf is a liability as a passer and now teams are stacking up against the run and making him throw.  And ugly things happen. THIS WEEK:  10/8:  @ UAB

11.  (LW – 11)  Mississippi  (2-3, 0-2)  (defeated Fresno State  38-28)  Randall Mackey becomes the third starting QB for the Rebels this year and leads his team to their first win over a FBS school.  Break up the Rebels.  The Rebels do have a decent ground game with Jeff Scott and Brandon Bolden, but that is about all the positives here.  THIS WEEK:  10/8:  OFF

12.  (LW – 12)  Kentucky  (2-3, 0-2)  (lost to #1 LSU 35-7):  Fortunately, Kentucky’s toughest stretch of the season is over and they have to take control of this season.  The defense did not play that bad, which sounds weird for allowing 35 points.  Morgan Newton was benched for true freshman Maxwell Smith and I have doubts whether this team can score points.  THIS WEEK:  @ #18 South Carolina
