Kentucky Basketball: What's going on?
By Tyler Adkins
If you are like me you are paying attention to UK basketball 12 months a year, and as we all know August is really slow by way of basketball news. But there are some things going on with basketball right now, and I have prepared a list for you of the happenings around the program today:
-In the biggest news, recruiting takes the forefront. Shabazz Muhammed and Dajuan Coleman have both confirmed they will be at Big Blue Madness on official visits. This is obviously huge news, and if UK can manage to get those two prospects for the 2012 class, then all of the worry about that class will go away. We all need to make Big Blue Madness a raucous atmosphere to show these two studs why they need to come to UK.
-In other recruiting news, Mitch McGary has said he will be taking an unofficial visit to UK on September 5th. This is interesting news because Coach Cal will be still out of the country with his Dominican Republic team during this time. However, it is an unofficial visit so McGary may just be wanting to view the campus and the facilities before he takes his official visit when Cal and his staff are on campus, and maybe he can check out a beat down at Rupp on that visit.
–Rajon Rondo has been quoted as saying he would stay at UK and be an assistant coach until the NBA lockout is over. He will enroll in classes and be able to help the team with practices. If this ends up happening, I am not sure we can measure the help it will be to the team and especially Marquis Teague and Ryan Harrow to have a NBA All-Star helping them get better every day.
-Jon Hood spoke with Coachcal.com today and had sparkling reviews of the freshman class, shocking I know. He said they are unbelievable athletes and told a story of him throwing a pass almost to the top of the backboard and Anthony Davis catching it and dunking it. Crazy. He also had a great quote about the games of John Wall, Brandon Knight and Marquis Teague:
“They specialize in different things. It’s like driving a manual. John had it broke off in sixth gear and could get there real quick. Brandon could shift pretty quickly and he was pretty fast. Marquis is like, oh my. He changes speed as good as any player I’ve seen.”
Oh my, indeed. And we are all hoping for a speedy recovery Jon.
-Former Cat Mark Krebs is selling the last of his book “Beyond a dream” and has reduced the price to $14.99 + tax. But he has dropped the shipping and handling, so if you don’t have your copy yet, GET IT. You can get a copy at www.beyondadreambook.com
That is all for tonight, as always GO BIG BLUE.
