Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Monday: 2012 targets solidified as John Calipari racks up the frequent flyer miles

facebooktwitterreddit

It has been a whirlwind first five days of the recruiting evaluation period as John Calipari and staff have been racking up the miles in the air.  Over the course of the last few days, it has become obvious who the main 2012 targets are.  Shabazz Muhammad has emerged as the top target in the class and even though he is rumored to be a UCLA lean, Jeff Goodman has tweeted out that the “smart money is on Kentucky”.  John Calipari spent time in both Indianapolis and Georgia over the weekend watching him play.

Archie Goodwin, DaJuan Coleman and Ricardo Ledo also have Kentucky high on their lists and are big targets.  John Calipari is not ready to concede Perry Ellis to Kansas yet either as he has wached Ellis play about half a dozen times in the past few days.  Other guys like TJ Warren and Mitch McGary have been offered as well.  If Kentucky can land 3-4 of the above guys, Calipari is in competition for a fourth straight number one recruiting class.

Brandon Ashley is a guy that seems to have fallen off of Kentucky’s radar recently, but apparently, John Calipari has called him recently and assured him that he remains a top priority.  Ashley is scheduled to cut his list to five or six schools soon and we will see if Kentucky makes the cut.

Even though the NBA is officially locked out, Brandon Knight took part in the “Play for Peace” Program at the Seeds of Peace International Camp in Otisfield, Maine.  The camp featured several NBA players and the athletes conducted basketball clinics for nearly 200 campers from across the Middle East and South Asia, providing teens from regions of conflict a chance to learn the values of teamwork and cooperation.

A couple of football Cats have been added to the preseason awards watch lists.  LB Danny Trevathan has been added to the 2011 Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list, which is awarded to the top defensive player of the year.  OL Larry Warford is on the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which goes to college football’s top interior lineman.

Changes are underway at Commonwealth Stadium as Kentucky will be sporting a new video scoreboard and new sound system for the upcoming season.  That will be complement by about 1800 feet of LED ribbon boards (below) that will encircle the stadium.

There have been lots of changes lately for football with the new uniforms and now word is leaking out that Kentucky will sport at least a new variation of their basketball uniform.  To be honest, I really hope that the basketball uniforms stay about the same.  There is no need to tinker with the blue unis and the “KENTUCKY” on the chest.  I would think that the “designs” on the back of the basketball uniform would go away, but this is all speculation.  What would you like to see in the new basketball uniform?  Give me a few options in the comments and I will put them in a poll later.
