WBN 5For Tuesday: Are You Ready For Some Football??
By Jason Marcum
Good Morning WBN!!! Since it is the middle of June, and hotter than West Texas on an August afternoon, I figured why not discuss some football, and since the NFL is probably looking at an abbreviated schedule at best, why not start a Monday Night College Football program and let Hank Jr. do his thing for the college level. College puts on a better show than the NFL anyway right??? So, before anyone else steals my idea, I think we should all call the ESPN and get them to work on this right away. Saturday football?? Sure. But why not put a marquee game on Monday Night for this season? It is a burden being talented and laid up with a bum knee….lol. Gives you too much time to think. But, alas, no one listens to the middle aged and overweight, so on with the links.
First: In what came as a surprise to no one, the BCS has stripped USC of their 2004 National Championship due to their “difficulties” with the NCAA. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but does the BCS not operate independently of the NCAA? And did the NCAA not just recently decide not to punish some Ohio State kids so it would not effect their BCS game?? And did the NCAA not make a statement to that fact?? So why would the BCS do something as a result of what the NCAA did to USC??? Oh what a tangkled web we weave gentlemen. I will have more on this tonight at nine.
Second: Joker Phillips says the Cats can turn close losses into victories this season. If he can do that, he will have accomplished something that no other Coach in Kentucky has done. Make Kentucky a threat to win the SEC. Turning close losses into wins over the last three years would give the Cats 10 more wins and have put them into at least one SEC Championship game scenario. I, for one, hope Joker is right on the money with this one.
Third: Robert Montgomery Knight has come out with his statement concerning his Alma Mater’s difficulties in football with the NCAA’s compliance division. It appears that Coach Knight, who was the poster boy for NCAA compliance during his days as a coach, feels as if the NCAA has “lost touch”. Hmmmm………curiouser and curiouser.
Fourth: There is not going to be a link for this one, just my commentary. The SEC voted to lower the signing number from 28 to 25 for football programs. Now, I am not much on numbers, and I rarely concern myself with how many freshmen are on the football team, since very few see true playing time. However, changing this rule does not prevent schools from turning a kid loose and bringing in another one if they find someone better. And to be honest, that was the problem with the rule anyway.
Fifth: Mike Slive discusses some issues that are of paramount concern to all college football fans throughout the country and the world. Tony Barnhart asks some difficult questions and Slive appears to give some honest answers to the ones he wants to. It is worth a read.
Since I am on a roll with football, I am going to delve a little deeper into the BCS/NCAA connection and how they need each other tonight at nine. Until then, enjoy the day WBN!!!!
