Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Tuesday: Calipari takes his shots at the media with his "radio silence" tweets

facebooktwitterreddit

Last year, Pete Thamel used the Memorial Day weekend to take his shots at John Calipari and his Kentucky program with his baseless Eric Bledsoe story.  ESPN’s Pat Forde and Dana O’Neil quickly followed and the evil media triumvirate was born.  Everything time there was something negative about Kentucky in the news, the triumvirate were quick to hope and twitter and take their shots.  Now that Kentucky and Calipari have been riding a wave of positive news stories, the threesome have been quiet and well, you can say that they have officially been called out on it.

One of the aforementioned positive stories about Calipari was by CBS’s Brett McMurphy.  In it, he says that Calipari jhas made the right choices when it comes to charity work and he talks about the side that most people don’t see about Calipari.

Kentucky’s incoming class of Wiltjer, Davis, Teague, and Gilchrist got more good publicity as Yahoo’s Jason King listed them as among the top newcomers in the SEC.  Here is what he said about the soon to be freshmen Cats:

"Anthony Davis, Kentucky, F – Some recruiting services have pegged Davis as the top overall player in the Class of 2011. The 6-foot-10 Davis recently grew seven inches in a year and still has a tremendous upside. Because he used to be a guard, Davis has a tremendous feel and understanding of the game. His shot-blocking and rebounding ability make him a game-changer defensively. His offensive skill set is good and continues to improve. Davis plays with tremendous toughness and is extremely coachable.Michael Gilchrist, Kentucky, SF – The third-ranked player in the Class of 2011 touts an elite level of athleticism that will make him a force in the SEC from the get-go. His ability to rack up points is often overshadowed by the ferocity with which he rebounds and defends. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound Gilchrist is solid from mid range but needs to improve his 3-point shooting. Mentally, though, Gilchrist has all the attributes (i.e. competitiveness, drive) of a winner. He prides himself in doing the little things it takes to be successful.Marquis Teague, Kentucky, PG – Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall and Brandon Knight all starred as freshman point guards under John Calipari. Teague hopes to be next on that list. The 6-foot-2 Teague is the top-rated player at his position in the Class of 2011. Teague has an explosive first step and is almost impossible to stop one-on-one. He scores a ton of points from the free-throw line and is tremendous in the open court. He’s perfect for Calipari’s dribble-drive offense.Kyle Wiltjer, Kentucky, F – A fundmentally sound player with a high basketball IQ, Wiltjer is a huge matchup problem for opposing defenders because of his ability to score both inside and out. Wiltjer is an exceptional passer and his shooting ability will help make Kentucky one of the most well-rounded, versatile teams in the country. His foot speed is a minor concern."

One thing to learn about the media is that there are always going to be writers looking to join the triumvirate.  In writing a story about Ohio State’s Jim Tressel, guess whose name gets throw into the mud for no apparent reason, and once again, with a lack of facts?

"A two-strike-and-you’re-out-rule would prevent someone such as Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari from skipping around the country just ahead of those pesky investigators. He had already moved on to his next gig when first UMass, then Memphis, had to forfeit any mention of their Final Four appearances because they had used ineligible players."

Football season is now just a couple of months away and it turns out that Joker’s biggst concern is putting points on the scoreboard.  That’s a pretty valid concern, Coach.
