Kentucky Wildcat Basketball: In The Case Of John Calipari, It's Safe To Assume
By dtadmin
OK, let me preface this article by saying I was going to write it before any of the Tony Woods stuff came up, so don’t think that Mr. Woods is what triggered this post. I get very few chances to crawl around inside the mind of John Calipari, because essentially it is a minefield for the amateur to play in. Coach Cal is always about three steps ahead of everyone else in his thinking, so as soon as you get it in your head you know what he is doing, he has already finished and moved on. Mrs. Calipari must be a saint to keep up with the pace he sets. Most of his players only have to go through it for 3-4 years. She has been doing it a long time. Kudos Mrs. C.
So now, about what it is safe to assume. You can assume that with Coach Cal, anything, anytime, anywhere can happen, and usually does. So when it comes to recruiting, until further notice, if a kid is inside the Top 50. You can automatically assume he is a Calipari target. If he is inside the Top 100, it is a pretty safe bet. But do not forget this. If the kids can dribble a basketball, has a great attitude, and is willing to work like a maniac, he has a shot with John Calipari, and we would be doing ourselves a disservice to exclude them from the possibility of becoming a Wildcat. So, when you hear that this kid got an offer from Coach Cal, or this kid has been in contact with Orlando Antigua, or this kid was on campus earlier today, don’t rule it out as being impossible. Because for Coach Cal, nothing is impossible. There are an infinite number of possibilities out there for every scenario, and Calipari plays them all out before the scene comes into frame. He must be an admirer of The Art Of War by Sun Tzu. He knows when to rattle the cages, and when to sit quietly and let the parade go by. And he knows that if there is a kid out there that he thinks fits his style ans system of playing basketball, then he can get them. It is simply a matter of deciding how much effort to put into it.
Former Coach Joe B. Hall was considered a master recruiter in his day. He had a way of getting a kid to see their future before they ever got to actually participate in it. But Coach Hall didn’t have to deal with kids changing commitments, the internet, Twitter, Facebook, or any of those technological challenges that Coach Calipari has not only faced, but he has embraced them and mastered their use.
So the next time you read on a little blog somewhere that this kid is a Calipari target, you might want to give it a little more of a valid look see, because if the kid is breathing and can handle a basketball, he is probably a Calipari target in one way or another. And even if we do not understand it, we are not supposed to. We are not Calipari.
