Thoughts On the Draft (And When the Rapture Will Happen)

If you watched the first round of the NFL draft last night, then you already know. Randall Cobb was not selected in the first round, but 13 offensive/defensive linemen were, leaving the board wide open now for the Cobb rapture to happen. There were some winners (CB Patrick Peterson being picked up at No. 5 by the Cardinals), some losers (Jake Locker at No. 8? Pffffffft) but nobody realized that having divinity on your team will turn you into an instant Super Bowl contender. From Baltimore’s pass on their pick to the Falcons trading five picks to move up to No. 6, it was a strange first day in NFL land. By the end of the round, I was looking at every team on the board and saying “They could use a slot receiver” but alas, no Cobb. Fortunately the second round is on now and talent like his will not be passed up again.
Mel Kiper doesn’t have Cobb in the second round at all, even ranking him below Hawaii WR Greg Salas in the best WR’s available. I like Kiper, but really? You think a WR in the WAC is going to outperform the SEC single season yardage record holder. You f***ed up Kiper, and Cobb is going to let you know from the endzone. The top end of the second round finds a lot of teams that could greatly benefit from having a football player like Cobb and is the area where most experts predicted he would go anyway, so we can have confidence that he will find a home, but where? Here are some of my potential destinations:
Bills (Pick No. 34)– In addition to the excitement of bringing Steve Johnson and Randall Cobb together, the Bills went defense in the 1st and now look at all the other massive holes in their team. Not a likely destination as there are much greater areas of need, but they could use him
Titans (Pick No. 39)– After picking up their QB of the future (good luck with that one) they can work on replenishing the rest of the offense. Once again, not a likely destination as Kenny Britt has now made it a greater need to find a deep threat receiver, but it would definitely keep regional fans interested in Titan football.
49ers (Pick No. 45)-The Niners have sufficiently built up their O-line but if TCU’s Andy Dalton or Arkansas’s Ryan Mallett are still there, that might swing this pick away from Cobb’s direction. The Niners’ needs fit Cobb’s resume perfectly, but their defensive secondary is struggling and is another stretch destination.
Rams (Pick No. 47)– They have their QB, they need someone to throw to. A much more likely selection than others, but O-line could be a focus, even with the top 15 OL off the board by now. the system and the setting is right, he could succeed here.
Seahawks (Pick No. 57)– Officially out of the top of the second, the Seahawks seem to be the most likely destination for the man-god of the Bluegrass. They are in desperate need of WR’s and the already have Pete Carrol man-crush Mike Williams as their No. 1. A little lower than where we would like to have seen him fall, but this draft has had plenty of crazy turns.
Seattle fans rejoice, you could potentially pick up an amazing player and he could learn about NFL kick returning from expert Leon Washington. Monday we’ll come back and analyze where the rest of the Cats in the draft went, and predict their fate into the future. Until then, may Randall Cobb’s blessings be upon you and keep you dry. I’m so sick of rain
