Wednesday: We're Talkin' 'Bout Footbaww
By Zach Rosen
There is absolutely no reason to write about a man that I considered largely bereft of morals (and was proven correct) and class (which I was proven wrong), Bobby Bowden was one of the best coaches in college football. 12 ACC titles and two national championships largely make up for the 12 vacated wins from using ineligible players during the 2006 and 2007 season, but ended his career on a somewhat sour note. If you need to look at his resume look no further than 1990-99: he coached Seminole teams that had eight 11-win teams, the other two were 10-win teams. Such a coaching performance like that is impressive no matter what level or where. But that is not the reason I liked him; it was his interviews. The Alabama native had an accent that made anything he said sound hilarious, especially any time he said the word “football”. The catch phrase “We’re talkin’ ’bout footbaww” was repeated several times in his career and became my friends’ catchphrase when August rolled around. Anyway, I’ve wasted enough time to tell you that, prior to the scrimmage Saturday, the football facility has sealed shut and will be offering up nothing. And we will have to like it.
But what oblong fans in the Bluegrass will like is the Blue-White scrimmage this weekend, where the common fan will get their chance to sit on the 50 yard line (actually in the release for the scrimmage) and we’ll get a first look at the 2011 version of the Wildcats. Due to injuries and concerns for depth it will be an Offense-Defense scrimmage with the 1st and 2nd teams playing only each other. “How will they be scoring this delightful affair?” you may ask, “after all the defense surely musn’t be judged solely on their constitutionals to the end zone.” First of all, I would tell you to cut the poofy talk but then, I wouldn’t have an answer for you. Nor do the coaches. For more information slide your mouse over here
Something else fans will like is the man-love the is being bestowed upon Randall Cobb. Todd McShay had a Sportscenter mid-day feature yesterday that showed a small sliver of the reasons we all love our man-god. In case you’re lazy, McShay has Cobb leaving at the top of the second round to…the Buffalo Bills. That would put two UK legends of lore on the field at once, and that leaves no doubt that it would create a vortex of awesome strong enough to propel the Bills to another Super Bowl (have you heard they used to be good? Crazy). If the Patriots don’t take him (and believe me, I don’t want them to) with one of their 80 high round picks, expect to see the man with the gorgeous eyes taken somewhere in the second round. Nobody is going to let him fall any farther.
Check back on Monday and I’ll bring you a rundown of the scrimmage, possibly with bits of nougat-y goodness of humor and sophistication.
