Kentucky Wildcat 2012 Basketball recruiting: The Perry Ellis Interview (revisited)
By Paul Jordan
A couple of months ago we had an interview with 2012 recruit Perry Ellis. Since that time, Perry has led his high school team to a third straight basketball championship and racked up quite a few other awards as well. In addition, he has won three straight Gatorade Player of the Year Awards in the state of Kansas. Perry was in Houston recently for the All American Championship and he took home the Most Outstanding Honors there.
Perry is obviously one of Kentucky’s top targets for the 2012 class so we decided to talk with him again and see how ghis season went, and how the recruiting game is stacking up.
WBN: Thanks for taking the time, Perry. How did your high school season go and how did you finish?
Perry Ellis: We had a great season. We went undefeated going 25-0 winning 6A Kansas state championship three years in a row. We have won 44 games in a row which is a record for 6A in the state of Kansas. Our team was ranked #5 in the final USA TODAY super 25 ranking.
WBN: Great news definitely. Now that the season is over, how are you occupying your time?
PE: I took one week off. Then I started training again. I played in the All American Championship Game in Houston on April 3rd and will be playing in the Real Deal in the Rock tournament this weekend.
WBN: Did you get a chance to watch a lot of the NCAA Tournament? What surprised you the most about the tournament?
PE: Well, I was surprised that Kansas lost and impressed that Kentucky made it to the final four.
WBN: Were there any teams that you are considering that impressed you in the tournament?
PE: Well, there were 4 of my 6 teams in the tournament. Memphis almost beat Arizona. I thought KState and Kansas would have gone further in the tournament then they did. Kentucky made a great run for it making it to the final four. Wichita State won the NIT so that was pretty impressive too.
WBN: Did the tournament change your mind about any of the teams?
PE: No, not really during March Madness anything can happen.
WBN: So right now, where do you stand on recruiting?
PE: Still have my same six: Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma, and Wichita State.
WBN: Which coaches are paying you the most attention right now?
PE: I would say probably Kentucky, Kansas and K State are right now.
WBN: What is your decision making process and when do you expect to make a decision?
PE: I plan to re-evaluate my list this summer. I plan to take official visits this fall and hope to sign early signing period in November.
WBN: What has been the weirdest or most amusing thing that has occurred during your recruitment?
PE: I honestly can’t think of anything really.
WBN: What are your goals for your upcoming HS season?
PE: I would sure like to win 4 state championships in a row. That was my goal as a freshman.
"Thanks a lot to Perry for taking the time to answer our questions. Also a big thanks to Perry’ mother, Fonda, and the WBN’s own Tyler Cox for helping to set this up."
