Washington DC: the new home of Kentucky Basketball stars
By Alan Smith
Washington, DC. One of my favorite places in the country outside of the Bluegrass. Nice weather, full of history, and home to the one and only John Wall. And now, also home to Victoria Dunlap. She was the WNBA’s Washington Mystics first-round pick on Monday. If you are a UK fan, you should at least already be familiar with the name. As a UK Hoops player, she was one of the main reasons why the Lady Cats had the successful season they did.
At 6-foot-1, Dunlap averaged 13.8 points and 8.3 rebounds during her time at UK. John Wall, who is finishing his rookie season with the Wizards, had some thoughts on Victoria: “She played undersized for her position in college, but she’s so athletic,” Wall said. “She can rebound, block shots. She’s always going to play hard for you.” This season alone, she earned Player of the Year honors, Defensive Player of the Year honors, and Associated Press honors.
Wall, who hasn’t had quite the season some critics expected of him so far, had some advice for Victoria: “Just work hard. I know she’s going to do that. She’s got to get used to traveling a lot, staying overnight and playing so many games. That will probably be the toughest thing for her.” Who knows, maybe the way the current NBA Draft selection holds out, Enes Kanter could be the next familiar name in Washington next season.
