Kentucky Wildcat Football – NFL 2K11: Is It Draft Day Yet?
By Zach Rosen
We’re a little more than two weeks away from the draft, and only one Cat is still making waves in the sea of prospects. Last week I posted a link to an article that said Cobb is the third best receiver in this draft behind physical freaks of nature A.J. Green and Julio Jones. The article simply stated what we already knew: Cobb can do the most with what he’s got, and he deserves to a high draft spot. That doesn’t always mean that he will be drafted highly, but the need for receivers is high this year and he could land comfortably in the late first round.
Opinions vary, but after some research, I have a rough idea where I think he could go, along with a few other notable Cats. Here they are:
Randall Cobb: The same things that made him the SEC single season total yardage leader is what will make him a high draft pick; he can do everything. He would fit best with a deep threat receiver and scouts project him to play slot receiver. Think Wes Welker without the accent. Kiper: 50th to Chargers McShay: 47th to Rams My guess? 39th to Tennessee. They are in need of a wide receiver and return man and even though they have need at QB, I don’t think anyone will be left with enough potential to make a reach at that point. Having a crafty team-first guy will make their offense better and allow Chris Johnson to not completely f**k up my fantasy football world.
Derrick Locke: Has slid comfortably back into the sea of mid to late round draft picks and not much has been heard from him. Unfortunately his size does mean he will not be a feature back in the NFL but he will be an excellent 3rd down back for anyone looking for one. My prediction? 5th round to the Dolphins. The Dolphins seem ready to take Mark Ingram if he is available when their turn is up and his abilities as a pass catcher out of the backfield are suspect at best. Locke is the opposite of Ingram in his playing style and will be a great change of pace and a threat down the field and on the outside.
Chris Matthews: Buried in a sea of receivers that have NFL size but questionable potential, but his size alone should make a team at least give him a look. My guess is that we won’t hear his name until the 6th or 7th round if he’s lucky, but I seem to remember another receiver with similar size and little to no hype coming into the draft and making a team. That receiver then proceeded to break loose and become a top receiving option for the Bills. If I had to make a wager, and it’s hard to pick a team this far into the draft, I’d say he could either go to the Rams or Panthers, both in need of a red zone threat.
The draft starts Thursday, April 28th and goes through Sunday, with the first two rounds televised during prime time on ESPN affiliates.
