John Calipari: You Have Our Blessings
By Paul Jordan
Well, you knew as soon as the Cats hit the Final Four that the gossip mongers ( some of you call them reporters), were going to be leaning over the back fences trying to get the first word on where John Calipari was headed when the season finished, and which NBA team was going to scoop him up. The latest stories have Coach Cal getting cozy with the folks in the Big Apple. You know, that team that Whoopi Goldberg coached a few years back. They are another basketball franchise with a storied history (although not as good as the Cats), but they are a pro team, so you have to cut them some slack.
Cal has only been in Lexington for two short seasons, and now supposedly he is going to New York for greener pastures (no NCAA, more fun). Yeah , Right. I have no idea what Cal is going to do, although I have a very hard time believing that he is going to leave Lexington without a title in his hands, just so he can tell the NCAA where to put it (actually he would not do that, but he has every reason to). But should Cal decide to go, I have but one thing to say. Go with God. Some of you are going to scream to the rafters if he leaves, claiming he did not live up to his commitment that he made at Big Blue Madness last year in his first season’s Address To The Commonwealth. Sorry, he actually has. Kentucky Basketball is back at the top of the heap again, and that 8th banner is once again in sight. And we owe it all to John Calipari. No NCAA scandals, no ridiculous nonsense to contend with, unless you count the lines for tickets since he arrived. But if John Calipari never coaches another game for Kentucky, he has given this team the ride of the century for the last two seasons, and the fans have never been more involved and enthused. And we owe all of that to Cal as well.
So, rather than whine or moan about the possibility of his leaving, I choose to say this coach, THANK YOU. I could not be prouder of you or the players you have coached the last two seasons for all of the hard work you have all put in. I not only have nothing but respect and love for you because of what you have done for Kentucky Basketball. And I will go one step further. If you do leave, and ever want to come back, please feel free to do so. There has never been another coach work harder, put more energy and enthusiasm into the program, or get such results so quickly, after walking into a situation such as you faced last year. All of us here in the Big Blue Nation appreciate the job you do, in the face of such pressure, and even more of that which comes from some members of the media and their incessant boorish attitudes concerning your work, and your stay here at Kentucky. So, if you have to go, then we do understand. We do not want you to, nor do we think it is best, but we do understand. Just remember you now have a home in Kentucky. And we want you here for as long as you will stay.
