Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Tuesday: Kentucky ex-coaches dominating open jobs talk
By Paul Jordan
If anything is going to bump the awfulness of Kentucky’s seeding in the NCAA Tournament from the top stories in “the five”, it would be the possibility of Tubby Smith coming back to the SEC next year. The Star Telegram has said that Arkansas has already had face to face contact with Tubby Smith and is close to hiring Tubby Smith. The website Sports by Brooks is also reporting that North Carolina State will fire Sidney Lowe this week and that Tubby is already a candidate for that job as well. Regardless, Tubby said in his radio show that he expects to return to Minnesota.
Not to be outdone, Billy Gillispie is now finding his name tossed about for the Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and the Arkansas jobs. It still appears that Gillispie is the front runner for the Texas Tech position One place Billy G will not end up is Wyoming as the folks at Wyoming have decided they want nothing to do with the embattled former UK coach:
"While some are arguing that UW athletics director Tom Burman should have made the move, a source close to the situation has told me that Parker Executive Search, the search firm UW is using, wouldn’t place Gillispie with a school that they are working with. The source also said that some of UW’s high-end donors made it clear they would consider pulling funds — amounts totalling six figures — if Gillispie was hired."
I never would have imagined it, but apparently John Calipari and “the tracksuit” Bob Huggins are text buddies. Apparently John Calipari sent HuggieBear a text during the selection show saying that they would be meeting up soon:
"I just got done talking to (coach John Calipari). He texted me at 6:01 and said ‘you know we are going to be playing each other again.’ I didn’t think that there was any chance. At this point, I think that they are seven in the RPI and we are 20 and we probably should have played a little later (in the tournament bracket)."
Yea, it is kinda messed up, HuggieBear. You actually have to feel for the Mountaineers as first they play the winner of a playin for the 12 seed and have two less days to find out who their opponent will be. Then, they have to face a team with a 7 RPI in the second round. Ugh.
Fox Sports has released a “draft preview” of Randall Cobb. I almost forgot how incredible the runs Cobb had against Auburn last year was, so this is a nice refresher:
Finally, the seedings for the NCAA Women’s Tournament were announced last night and the UK Hoops team also received a number four seed. The Wildcats will face 13 seed Hampton on Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is the eight NCAA appearance for Kentucky. Go here for a look at the women’s tournament and a preview of the Hampton game.
