Well it has been another tough weekend for the Bat Cats who came up short this weekend going 1-2 this weekend at the Houston College Classic. The Cats lost a few heart breakers in Friday night’s game the Cats had a come from behind rally to lose 8-7 to Rice and a close 8-5 game against Houston. The weekend did close on a good note with a win 2-1 win over Utah.

Ok let me set to mood for you, it’s the top of the seventh the Cats are down by four runs its 3-7 seven. Luke Maile steps up to the plate. The offensive leader of the team gets ready in the box and hits a single through the right field. Then with Maile on first all hope begins to rise Braden Kapteyn steps up to the plate and once he does he beings the Cats rally to attempt to win the game by knocking a two run homer out of the park to left field. There is still hope for the Cats who are now down by two runs but that is all they could tack on.

Well the Cats allow another run in the bottom of the seventh to a solo homerun to Michael Ratterree that would put the nail in the coffin of the Cats but they would continue to fight. Down by three runs now the Taylor Black sets into the box to knock a double down the line to start off the inning in come back fashion. Thomas McCarthy is now at bat he hits a single down the right field line to allow Black to advance to third base. Then guys are set and the pitcher throws a wild pitch and Black scores. With McCarthy on second Chad Wright steps up to bat with a runner in scoring position hits a single to right. Maile hits a sacrifice fly to score McCarthy for the final run of the game to lose in heart break in the final innings.

Game two of the week puts the ace Alex Meyer on the mound to match up against Houston. Meyer would go 6.2 innings but be awarded the loss. He faced 28 batters striking out six and walking three all while giving up four runs on five hits. The top of the seventh of another rally inning only this time it was not for the cats. Kentucky had a 2-1 lead going into the seventh inning with Meyer still on the mound. The Bat Cats give up six runs to make it a 7-2 game. The cats score one run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth while giving up a run in the top of the ninth to lose 8-5.

The final game of the weekend brings Jordan Cooper to the mound and with help from freshman reliever Trevor Gott they bring home a 2-1 win over Utah. Cooper pitched a solid seven innings of work giving up one run in the bottom of the first inning but that would not happen again. He faced 25 batters and threw 107 pitches. Cooper struck out nine batters in the pitching duel while walking three and giving out a hit by pitch. Cooper would go on to pick up his first win of the season. Gott came in eighth to pitch two solid innings of scoreless baseball to pick up his first save of the year. Kapteyn was the hero of this game scoring runs from the DH spot.

At the end of the weekend the Bat Cats went home with a 5-6 record.
