Kentucky Wildcat Daily Farmers Almanac: 3/7/2011
By Paul Jordan
Here we are just three days now till the start of the SEC Tournament and I have been remiss to post an actual tournament bracket yet. Due to size limitations on this site, I can’t really find one big enough to show up (yea, that’s what she said — by the way. Steve Carrell OWNS ‘Thats what she said — he OWNS it” ). Well I looked ten minutes and could not find the video of Liz Lemon to complement the quote so you just have to watch “30 Rock” I guess … anyway, here is a link to the full SEC Tournament Bracket.
The last regular season polls were released today and Kentucky made a healthy jump in both polls. The Wildcats jumped five points in the AP Top 25 to #15 and seven spots in the ESPN/USA Today poll to come in at #16. The Florida Gators are 12th in both polls and Vanderbilt, despite losing two games last week, come in at 24th of the ESPN poll. All of this would seem to indicate that Kentucky is sitting at a #4 seed heading into the SEC Tournament
And if you are a fan of Joe Lunardi, you would be right. Lumardi has placed the Wildcat’s as the number four seed and even more exciting for me is the fact Kentucky would be playing in Tampa. According to Lunardi’s fantasy-land, Kentucky would play the College of Charleston, who defeated Tennessee and then a juicy re-match against the track suit and his Mountaineers. According to Lunardi, the SEC has some work left to do to get those six teams in the tournament. Florida has a #3 seed, Vanderbilt has a #6 seed and Tennessee has a #9 seed.
And now, let me rant for a second. I touched on this issue in the podcast yesterday, but can someone please tell me how Tennessee, at 18-14, have a NCAA bid locked up already? Considering an early SEC Tournament loss to Arkansas is possible since the Hawgs have already beaten the Vols once this season. That would leave the Vols at 18-15. Explain it, please.
Now Lunardi does have Alabama and Georgia as his first two teams out of the Tournament as well. Keep in mind, those two teams are 2-1 versus Tennessee this season. Not trying to bash on the Vols, but just saying…
More SEC love for the Wildcats and Brandon Knight this week. Brandon Knight has now won back to back honors as the SEC Freshman of the Week and has taken the honor six times this season, which ties a SEC record. Alabama James Robinson took the honor six times in 1991.
Furthermore, Kentucky has won the award 11 of 17 times this season, which matched last season’s mark. In short, UK players have won the award 22 of 34 times in the Calipari era. That guy can recruit, eh?
More honors and awards are starting to be released as well. CBS Sports has named both Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones to their All SEC team and Brandon Knight was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Also Yahoo! Sports released their All American Teams and Terrence Jones made the third team and Brandon Knight was named honorable mention. Doron Lamb also got recognition as the best Sixth Man in the country.
Other than that, not a lot more going on today other than post season awards and tournament talk. It’s been fun filling in on the Almanac today, but Phillip will be back tomorrow to regain his spot. Have a good rest of your Monday, BBN.
