Kentucky Wildcats Baseball: Sad Weekend For the Bat Cats
By dtadmin
Opening weekend for the Bat Cats was not as successful as they thought it would be. The Cats went 0-3 on the weekend with an 11-6 loss to College of Charleston, a 6-4 loss to Marshall, and a 3-1 loss to Miami(OH). While the Cats were not able to pull out a victory you could see several promising things out of this team.
One of the Promising things you could see from this weekend is pitching. The two standout pitchers of the weekend were Taylor Rogers and Alex Meyer. Rogers pitched six full innings of baseball against Marshall on Saturday giving up seven hits and two runs. He posted up seven strikeouts facing 23 batters. The most impressive stat of the day is Rogers was able to go through all those innings without issuing a walk. He had a rocky first inning and that was when he gave up his two runs but after that he got settled down and through for the win. He gave up the ball at the end of the sixth with a 2-2 game after which freshman reliever Trevor Gott took over for the remainder of the game. Gott gave up four runs on three hits and issued a walk to walk away with the loss.
Sunday’s game put junior Alex Meyer on the mound where he posted career numbers. Meyer went seven innings giving up two runs on three hits. He issued three walks in the game but by far his most amazing stat of the game was that he struck out a career high 13 batters but this wasn’t enough to get the win. Meyer is setting an amazing start for a great start to the year and creating an awesome resume for this year’s MLB draft.
So as you can see the Bat Cats do not lack in pitching because in both of those final two games of the week the Cats put up great numbers. The only problem was there bats was no able to create enough run support for them. Losing by two runs in each game is not a bad weekend considering this was the first outing of the year and the bats will soon be warming up.
Kentucky was able to get a few bats going this weekend though as Braden Kapteyn had amazing opening weekend going 3-for-12 batting with a .250 batting average. He scored four runs with three RBI all coming off of a three run homer. It looks like Kapteyn will be batting in the cleanup spot this season or at least it looks to be that way at this point. Another Bat that got hot this weekend is Luke Maile who is batting in the five spot this season. It looks that these two guys together will be able to put up some runs this season.
The season continues with two games this week one against Morehead State and the Cats home opener against Eastern Michigan. The matchup against Morehead should be an interesting game and a chance for the Cats to bounce back as Morehead is also seating on a goose egg with a 0-3 record. Morehead had a rough weekend and in one match up against Western Carolina losing 18-0 so this could be a good game for the Bat Cats to gain some emotion. This instate match up will take place Tuesday at 2 PM.
Eastern Michigan may prove to be a challenge for the Cats on Wednesday. EMU is currently 1-2 in opening weekend. They faced a tough team in the 10th ranked Clemson. They were able to pull out one win against them 7-6. The Cats will have to bring out a skilled pitcher to face this team if they want to pull out the victory. This match up will take place at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Wednesday, 4 PM.
I feel finally getting home will be a great advantage for the Bat Cats, sleeping in your own bed and playing on your own field goes a long way for a struggling team. Hopefully this week they will be able to turn it around and pull out some wins.
