Kentucky Wildcats Basketball: Recruiting Update- 2013 Top Prospects
By Paul Jordan
If there is one thing that Billy Gillispie taught us before we left UK, it’s don’t drink on the job. No, just kidding. But besides that, he showed us that it’s never too early to get a head start in recruiting. We already have the 2011 class locked up, and the coaching staff is working hard to get the 2012 prospects on board. They haven’t offered any scholarships to any freshmen or sophomores–yet. But we’re just going to have a quick look at the top prospects in this class of high school sophomores so we can get associated with them:
Aquille Carr- PG- NR (Rivals); 3-star (Scout): Don’t let the rankings fool you; Carr is one, or will be, one of the top players in his class. He is listed as 5’6″, but is one of the quickest point guards out there. He is averaging 25.5 ppg so far this season; in one game alone, he went off for 57 points, something Jodie Meeks couldn’t even accomplish. Despite being a point guard, he can shoot the ball very well and his speed gives him an advantage to carry the ball on the fast break. He has tremendous potential, and the next two season will determine where he stands in terms of recruiting.
Andrew Harrison- PG/SG- No. 1 PG & overall (Rivals); No. 2 SG overall (Scout): Just as Carr is, Harrison is a point guard as well as a shooting guard. What sets them apart, though, is the fact that Harrison’s skill set has him more built to play the point as a lead guard, and also the fact that he isn’t as much of a consistent outside shooter as Carr is. But it doesn’t mean he can’t shoot, either. He is able to push the ball up the court and has good size as well at 6-foot-4. All these qualities are what make Harrison the top prospect in his class, for now. His list for now consists of schools such as: Arizona, UCLA, Baylor, North Carolina, and Kentucky.
Julius Randle- PF- No. 3 overall (Rivals); No. 1 PF overall (Scout): What is great about Randle, is that as great of a player that he already is, his stock continues to grow. He is only halfway through his sophomore season, and he already has six offers from various schools, some in the Big 12. He is from Texas, so he is in the Longhorns backyard, as well as Baylor, Kansas, and Oklahoma, all schools who have offered already. Most scouts believe that he should be, or become, the top player in this class sooner or later. And there’s no reason to think why not. He has all the potential in the world, as well as his work ethic now, which is starting to pay off early. As a 6-foot-8 power forward, he has many weapons in his arsenal. Offensively, he has many counter moves, and can either take a turn around jumper, or take his defender one-on-one in the block. On defense, he is a great shot blocker. Kentucky is on his list, for now. But is he on their list? We’ll have to see.
Aaron Harrison- SG- No. 10 overall (Rivals); No. 4 SG overall (Scout): If you know Andrew Harrison, then you know Aaron. The pair of twin brothers both play the guard position, with the exception of Aaron strictly playing the two guard. He is able to run the floor and get open to knock down the open three. He, as well as his brother, do not have any offers yet but are being recruited by the same schools.
Jabari Parker- SF/PF- No. 11 overall (Rivals); No. 2 PF overall (Scout): Parker is one of the more well known players in this class. He has impressed many scouts at the most recent tournaments this season, and it has apyed off for him because he has a ton of scholarship offers. But after a few months, he should be more likely to cut that list down from the 20 or so schools he has listed. Parker can shoot from the outside, and has a nice touch with his shot. He is able to run the court and has great vision. He is one prospect we should hear more about, considering he has Kentucky on his list.
